It's a wonderful time of year and I hope you can take time to visit your forest preserves to enjoy a walk and view the Fall colors! Heron Creek Forest Preserve is just down the road at the corner of Old Mc Henry Rd. and Rt. 22 - - it's a beautiful location and has a great playground for the kids! Enjoy the rest of the month of October and please stay safe! Thanks!

 Tollway Completion Soon

294The 30 mile stretch of the North Tri-State between O'Hare International Airport and Grand Avenue in Gurnee should be open to four lanes of traffic in each direction by the end of this year (assume no weather related problems).

This major construction road work, including bridges is expected to be complete by the holidays and we should see four lanes open, in each direction, from the Wisconsin state line to the Indiana/Illinois border. Sections of the Central and South Tri-State are also expected to be complete by year's end.

 New Forest Preserve Land Acquisitions

Near Wadsworth, the Van Zelst property is approximately 81 acres and is located in Newport Township on Route 173. The property is currently in agricultural production and based on the 1939 air photo, has excellent potential for wetland restoration because of hydric soils contained on the site. This site will be a great addition to the newly formed Oak-Hickory Forest Preserve, bringing the total acreage to that new preserve to 209 acres.

OakHickory

The Heffernan property is approximately 41 acres and is located on West Town Line Road in Lake Villa Township. Acquisitions of this property would protect the groundwater recharge areas for the Chain O'Lakes and Cedar Lake. This site contains areas of hydric soils that could be restored to wetland communities, as well as areas formerly occupied by an oak savanna community. Once restored, this property would provide habitat for sandhill cranes, sedge wrens and bluebirds. This property, along with the Wayne Hummer Trust property to the west, will create a wonderful new preserve in the northwest area of Lake County and allow for further trail expansion.

BlueBird

The Wayne Hummer Trust property is approximately 59 acres and is located on West Town Line Road and Route 59 in Lake Villa Township. This property has many of the same attributes as the adjacent Heffernan property. Acquisition of this property, along with the Heffernan property to the east, will create a new forest preserve of approximately 100 acres.

The Light property is approximately 42 acres and is located in Avon Township on Fairfield Road. The site contains excellent examples of savanna type landscape with ponds, wetlands and mature oak trees. Acquisition of this property will provide future extension of the Millennium Trail and the potential to connect the Millennium Trail to Nippersink Forest Preserve to the east.
