H1N1 Update From Lake County Health Department

Craig Taylor Representative District 19

CraigTaylor
I've been in contact with the Lake County Health Department in an effort to get an H1N1 Clinic scheduled for a location in District 19 (Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer, Lake Zurich & Long Grove). Ela Township Supervisor, Lucy Prouty and I are both concerned that the closest County Clinic is in Mundelein. Lucy has agreed to host a H1N1 clinic, just as they do for regular flu shots, if we can secure it. Unfortunately, the County is stretched thin and vaccine is difficult to come by right now, so, it'll be an uphill battle to get a clinic here. I was told that we have an abundance of outlets in our area that will be providing H1N1 vaccinations and I've asked to be provided with an address list of those locations. Once I get this information I'll forward it to you. Below, I've included a letter I received from the Health Department. It gives the latest H1N1 information we have. I'm again including the address and times for the Mundelein Clinic.

Letter from Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center: Health Department H1N1 Flu Update 10.23.09

Health Department Flu Update

We would like to provide an update regarding current H1N1 influenza activity and the vaccination situation. In the last week influenza activity has increased dramatically on the national, state and local level. In Lake County, this increase was evidenced by an increase in ER visits for influenza-like illness (ILI), higher hospitalizations, increased doctor's office visits and school absenteeism.

Vaccination is considered the primary medium for controlling the spread of H1N1 influenza. As a result, the federal government expected to provide adequate vaccine supplies to cover the target groups and eventually for everyone. Their communications indicated that the first large shipments would be available at the local level in mid-October. As a result, local health departments planned their H1N1 vaccination clinics accordingly.  However, due to manufacturing issues, vaccine shipments have been delayed.  As of this writing, Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center has received no vaccine.

As you know the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center has scheduled five H1N1 flu vaccination clinics in Gurnee, Round Lake Beach, Waukegan, Mundelein and North Chicago for high priority groups. The clinics have been scheduled to open on Thursday, October 29, pending vaccine availability. We are doing everything that we can to speed up the distribution process and are in constant communication with the Illinois Department of Public Health. However, if we do not receive a shipment by early next week we will postpone the clinics until we have the vaccine in hand. If this turns out to be the case, we will post the new clinic schedule on our web site and ask for your assistance in getting the word out to the Lake County community.

As much frustration as the present situation has caused, please keep in mind that our vaccination campaign was planned for the long term and will be supported by a large number of providers in both the public and private sector.  In addition to vaccine, there are other methods that can be employed to check the spread of this disease.  We recommend the following effective control measures such as, recognizing the early symptoms, staying home when sick, following proper cough etiquette, washing your hands and using good health habits.  We appreciate your understanding during this challenging pandemic year. We will continue communicating with you routinely. If you have any questions please call our flu hotline at: 847/377-8350.

Also, please watch our latest video on the H1N1 flu that was produced by LCTV, the County's cable television station:
