 Lake County Flu Clinic

ShotThe Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center has scheduled clinics for seasonal flu vaccine. The clinics are located throughout Lake County and will run Sept. 4 to Oct. 9. The seasonal flu vaccine will not offer protection from H1N1 (Swine) pandemic influenza. The Health Department will provide additional information on the H1N1 vaccine, including scheduling of clinics, as it becomes available.

Three high-volume clinic sites will offer appointments, which can be made conveniently by visiting www.lakecountyflu.com. Walk-ins will also be accepted at these sites. Individuals also may call these clinics directly to make an appointment. Six clinics are exclusively walk-in. Following are the dates and times of all seasonal flu vaccine clinics:

In addition to the scheduled flu clinics, seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccinations for all age groups will be available at the Immunization Annex on the Belvidere Medical Campus, 2303 Dodge Avenue in Waukegan, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Mondays from September 14 through October 12. Also, seasonal flu vaccinations will be available at any year-round children's vaccination clinic. Please refer to www.lakecountyflu.com for a schedule of these clinics.

It is important that persons 65 and over bring their Medicare part B cards to the clinics, which will cover the cost of the flu and pneumonia vaccines. Medicaid and All Kids will also be accepted. Fees are $35.00 for the flu vaccine and $52.00 for the pneumonia vaccine, based on the ability to pay.

Any Lake County resident over the age of 6 months is eligible to get a seasonal flu shot through the Health Department. The Health Department has initially ordered more than 12,000 doses of adult and pediatric seasonal flu vaccine.

The Health Department is urging residents of all ages to obtain an annual flu shot in anticipation of the flu season (typically, November to April). The Department also urges those at high risk for pneumonia, including persons at least 65 years of age or people with chronic illnesses, to talk with a nurse or healthcare provider about whether a pneumonia shot is appropriate for them.

"The challenge for us this flu season is to help protect residents not only against the seasonal flu, but the H1N1 flu," said Irene Pierce, the Health Department's Executive Director. "Our plan is to implement two separate flu vaccine campaigns, one for the seasonal flu and one for H1N1. Two flu campaigns will stretch our resources. We will be partnering with private providers, retail pharmacies, schools and colleges to provide H1N1 vaccine to all high risk groups."

The Health Department continues to work with federal, state and local government entities on logistical issues related to an H1N1 vaccine campaign. Public health at the federal level is organizing a campaign to offer vaccination to about 160 million people within several months.

The target population groups for the later arriving H1N1 vaccination will be: individuals 6 months to 24 years of age; caretakers and household contacts of children under 6 months of age; all pregnant women; healthcare and emergency medical services employees and people 25 to 64 years of age with associated medical conditions that put them at high risk for flu-related medical complications.  In Lake County these groups represent approximately 260,000 individuals. Therefore, it is expected that private providers and retailers will also be offering the H1N1 vaccine.  More detailed information on Lake County's H1N1 vaccination campaign will be available as plans are finalized.

For more information regarding seasonal flu clinics, clinic access or for information on flu vaccination available through additional Health Department immunization clinics, contact the Health Department at: (847) 377-8470 or visit www.lakecountyflu.com.
