Take your stuff to STUFF, Etc.
and help MECCA!

MECCA recently established a charitable account with the Iowa City and Coralville Stuff, Etc. resale and consignment stores. In January we kicked off the charitable account with an employee drive.

Proceeds of the sale of the items donated will support all of MECCA's programs. You can participate by taking gently used, unwanted items to either store and requesting the proceeds of their sale be added to MECCA's charitable account.

Stuff, Etc. will provide you with a tax donation receipt for 50% of the value.  Unlike regular consignments, you do not need to make an appointment to drop off charitable items. Thanks in advance for your support!
 Did you Know?

MECCA serves over 27,000 inidividuals annually through our many programs. Just think of what we can accomplish with your continued support. Thank you for making it possible for us to provide hope for so many Iowans!

World AIDS Day1ICARE Spreads Awareness
on World AIDS Day

In recognition of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, ICARE, along with Johnson County Public Health provided FREE HIV Testing for 26 individuals over the course of 5.5 hours. This is the second year the two agencies teamed up to provide this free service. A big thanks to the volunteers who helped sign in folks and occupy our ICARE booth!

In addition, ICARE staff and seven community volunteers braved the cold to distribute 700 Safe Sex Kits to people passing by on the Iowa City Ped Mall.

A Stitch of Generosity
Quilt2
Throughout the year, the East Iowa Heirloom Quilters and Old Capital Quilters Guild design and create beautiful quilts for families living in our Transitional Housing apartments. They are a welcoming touch that help our clients feel at home. Thank you to all the individuals who help with this heartwarming project!

Afgan1In December, Transitional Housing families also received a special holiday gift from an Iowa City group of knitters and crocheters through Warm Up America! Twelve beautifully handcrafted afghans were donated to Transitional Housing for snuggling up during this long cold winter.

What's in a Grant

Exciting News for our Bernie Lorenz Recovery Program!

Bernie Lorenz Recovery (BLR) was recently awarded two major gifts from Des Moines area organizations. We are proud and honored to receive these funds. BLR relies on these partnerships and the generous donations from the public to be able to provide vital services for our women in this program.

Chrysalis Foundation $5,000 grant awarded
Bernie Lorenz Recovery is honored to be awarded a $5,000 Community Response Grant from the Chrysalis Foundation again this year. On December 14, 2009 MECCA staff attended the Chrysalis Awards Reception. Staff members from BLR attend Chrysalis Women's Alliance meetings regularly and partner with the foundation whenever possible to serve the needs of both organizations. BLR is appreciative of the generous award and looks forward to a continued relationship with the Chrysalis Foundation.

Prairie Meadows $10,000 grant
Bernie Lorenz Recovery was recently awarded a $10,000 Community Betterment grant from Prairie Meadows. Staff will be attending the upcoming awards luncheon at Prairie Meadows on February 11 to receive this gift. We want to thank Prairie Meadows for their generosity and commitment to the women we serve.
