This Month's Articles

Say No to Bullying

Some research reports that up to half of school children are bullied at least once.  A few simple strategies can help your child from being teased, threatened, or hurt.

Tell an adult.  Reinforce to your child that reporting a bully isn't "tattling".  If they are bullied, they should alert an adult immediately. Take your child serious if they come to you with a bullying situation.  Tell your child you'll follow up in a way that makes them comfortable, such as calling the school guidance counselor.

Stay Calm.  Fighting back gives a bully what they want - a reaction.  It can also lead your child to getting in trouble.  Tell your child to speak in a firm tone stating "Stop! Leave me alone." and walk to the nearest adult.

Safety is in numbers.  Being with at least one other person can greatly discourage a bully.  Encourage your child to walk with friends in hallways, at lunch, in the restroom, and on the bus.  In the event bullying does occur, the other child may be able to get help or give details about the incident.

Time to Get Ready for School

It's time to start getting our students ready for the school year - it will be here before we know it.  With all the back-to-school shopping we traditionally do to prepare for school, we sometimes forget that the most important piece of getting ready for the school year is preparing our students!  If you haven't done as much as you had planned over the summer to keep their minds sharp, you may want to consider enrolling them in tutoring prior to school starting.  These next 3 weeks can be a very valuable time to get their brains back in "school mode," particularly for high school math.  Algebra and Geometry skills aren't ones that typically get much use over the summer, and it can take some time to get them back in step with these principles.

People often turn to tutoring only after repeated struggles in the classroom.  At that point we're not only dealing with a skills deficit, but also one of confidence.  Using these next 3 weeks to review some key elements from last year, and get a jump on some of the principles they'll be seeing in this year's classes, can help ensure your child gets out of the gates quickly.  Better to start ahead of the game than play catch-up two months into the school year.  Call today to get the ball rolling!
