Issue: # 2 June-July 2009
Greetings!

Welcome to the Land O' Lakes KnowledgePoints newsletter, In The Know.  During each issue of In The Know we will provide you with information that will help ensure your child's success in school and in life.  We hope your summer is off to a great start!  Make sure to keep your child's mind engaged over the summer so they don't give back all of the gains that they worked so hard to achieve this year!

Education is an Investment

"Education is an investment" is something we've heard so many times that we take it for granted. But with the escalating cost of higher education, many families wonder whether the high cost of tuition, the opportunity cost of choosing college over full-time employment, and the accumulation of thousands of dollars of debt is, in the long run, worth the investment. And with many struggling junior high and high school students questioning whether college is "right for them," how do we as parents quantify the benefits of a college education?

Well, let's look at the data. Workers with a high school degree earned an average of $31,286 in 2007, while those with a bachelor's degree earned an average of $57,181 - almost twice as much! And according to the Census Bureau, college graduates earn almost $1 million more than high school graduates over their adult working life (an average of $1.2 million vs. $2.1 million). What's more, the income gap between those with and without a college degree continues to grow.

College graduates also enjoy benefits beyond increased income.  According to Sallie Mae, studies have shown...

Increased Competition for College Acceptance

Think getting into a four-year college is increasingly competitive? You're right. According to the 2008 State of College Admission Report by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the growing number of high school graduates is creating increased competition for spots in the freshman classes of America's four-year colleges and universities. "Gaining admission to your college or university of choice is getting harder...much harder" Newsweek reports.

There are three main factors making college admissions more competitive: 1- increasing number of the population in the US, 2- rising number of international students, 3- the need for a secure future and better lifestyle. Last spring, the largest number of high-school graduates in the history of the country --some 3.33 million - donned a cap and gown, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

We have a prime example of this right here in our back yard. At a time when demand for admission to the University of South Florida has never been higher, the acceptance rate for prospective freshmen has never been lower. Until the past 2 years...

Take Advantage of the Summer and Get Ahead!

All of our standard tutoring programs will be offered over the summer.  This is an excellent time to focus on filling those learning gaps that may be present, particularly if your family's schedule didn't allow for it during the school year or if you've been taking a "Homework Help" approach to instruction.  Now that school is out, many families are even increasing their hours per week in an attempt to complete their programs over the summer and really have their child ready for the start of school.  Give your child the skills and confidence they'll need  to make next year a great year!

Just for the summer, we're also offering "Summer Enrichment Camps"  for those families who aren't necessarily looking to make up ground over the break, but want to keep their children's minds sharp!

BizWorld
Join us for a hands-on business adventure as students learn first hand how math fits into daily business situations.  This program also provides a fantastic introduction to the basics of running a business and financial concepts.  Using their math skills, students
will develop a "business" to share with family and friends.

Budding Authors
This camp is especially for young authors who love to put pen to paper.  Students will plan, write, edit and create their own books.  They will even have the option to provide illustrations.  Books will be bound in a hard cover, providing a lasting keepsake that your child can proudly share.

The Book Buzz
Help your child get a head start on those books on the summer reading list.  Students will gain reading comprehension skills by participating in discussion groups and reader response activities.  Your child will create and present a unique and creative book project unlike any book report they've ever done before.

Art Exploration
Does your child have a creative flair and need an outlet for it? Let them take part in these hands on, "minds on" opportunities to paint, draw, and create. Your child will learn about color, design principals, and tools for artists. They will put their knowledge, imaginations and skills together during these sessions to create works of art using different mediums in a fun environment.

StartingPoints Beginner's Reading
Students will move their bodies to reinforce the sounds and letters with their zoo friends as they gain phonetic awareness.  Wonderful program for beginning/early readers.

Study Skills
Help your child develop and practice good study skills.  Following a proven curriculum,  your middle or high school child will learn how to manage time, habits, and place; take notes; prepare for and take tests.

From Our Families

"Austin had not been attending KnowledgePoints for more than a month when his teacher told us she noticed a change in him and asked if we were doing anything different. Even our daughter noticed a difference and commented on it. She wanted to attend as well so we enrolled her the following month. Both have made great progress and they actually have fun while they're there - they truly look forward to it. I am so happy with Knowledge Points and "homework time" is so much more enjoyable!!"
