Research to Stop Early Pregnancy Loss

Recently at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) annual conference in Orlando, a presentation was made sharing research Dr. Sweet did with Gary Harton.

Dr. Craig Sweet and other reproductive colleagues collaborated on research with Reprogenetics in Livingston, NJ, that used Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array CGH) to improve karytotyping, a technique that analyzes chromosomal problems such as those seen in early pregnancy losses. Array CGH allowed the group to directly analyze the pregnancy loss cells. This method provided more accurate results by preventing a common problem occurring when the cells don't grow or when maternal cells overgrow miscarriage cells in the laboratory evaluation process.

Spontaneous loss tissue found to have extra chromosome 7 by array CGH while routine karyotype yielded no results.

It is estimated that 50-70% of early pregnancy losses are due to chromosomal problems such as extra or missing chromosomes. Everyone that miscarries wants to know why it occurred and this type of information can be used to help predict the success or failure of the next pregnancy. Though this work is preliminary, it will advance the understanding of pregnancy loss and is the start of a broad leap forward with far more accurate results compared to the classic but flawed routine karyoptyping.

Mr. Harton received his Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University in 1987 and is currently working on his Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of Kent, Canterbury, UK. He He recently joined Reprogenetics after 22 years in various roles at Genetics & IVF Institute including both laboratory and management positions.  Mr. Harton manages the molecular PGD sections including single gene defect testing and array-based PGD at Reprogenetics and is an author on over 40 peer reviewed scientific articles and abstracts. He is certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) as a Technical Supervisor, Molecular Diagnostics, and is a member of the ASRM in addition to other organizations.

Conception After Cancer

Recently passed, October is often known as cancer awareness month, most notably for breast cancer awareness. For many cancer patients and survivors, the thought of preserving fertility or future family building is a concern.
