Summer Reading Program: Nonprofit Edition

Summer is upon us here in southern Arizona and the library's Summer Reading Program has just begun. What better way to beat the heat and help out your nonprofit than by reading some fun nonprofit books? The following are titles that are short, simple, and FUN reads that will allow you to gain knowledge that you can immediately put into play to strengthen your nonprofit: Friend Raising: Community Engagement Strategies for Boards Who Hate Fundraising But Love Making Friends by Hildy Gottlieb, Great Boards for Small Groups: A 1-hour Guide to Governing a Growing Nonprofit by Andy Robinson, or Nonprofit Essentials: Recruiting and Training Fundraising Volunteers by Linda Lysakowski.

Fire Control Projects Supported

The FM Global Fire Prevention Grant Program supports a wide array of fire prevention, preparedness, and control efforts throughout the U.S. and internationally. Funded projects include pre-fire planning for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities; fire and arson prevention and investigation; and fire prevention education and training programs. Fire departments and brigades, as well as national, state, regional, local, and community organizations are eligible to apply.

Jewish Documentary Film Post-Production Grants

The Lynn and Jules Kroll Fund for Jewish Documentary Film provides grants for the completion of original documentary films that promote thoughtful consideration of Jewish history, life, culture, and identity. In the past, grants have generally ranged in size from $15,000 to $35,000.

Arizona Humanities Council Project Grants

Deadline: July 20, 2012 (required letter of intent)
Arizona Humanities Council (AHC) Project Grants are competitive awards for innovative, community-based projects that connect Arizonans to the humanities through public programming. Grant requests may range up $10,000 depending on matching support. Projects that are being especially considered are those with either an Arizona Centennial 2012or Project Civil Discourse theme. The AHC will be presenting a grants orientation workshop at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library on June 18th from 10:00-11:00 am. Register for the workshop.

Grants for Music Education

The Mockingbird Foundation supports music education, primarily for children. Projects may encourage expression in all musical forms. There is a preference for projects for disadvantaged children 18 years or younger (those with low skills, income, with disabilities, and/or in foster care, and hospitals). Projects may also target college students, instructors, or adult students. Grants will be made of up to $5,000.

Cultural Organization Grants

The Margaret E. Mooney Foundation supports organizations involved in arts and cultural pursuits, including theater, opera, and dance organizations. Past grants have ranged from$5,000 to $106,000.

Grants for Higher Education Partnerships

Deadline: June 27, 2012
The Lumina Foundation and the Kresge Foundation are teaming up to offer grants to encourage state education systems to implement consistent approaches to awarding associate degrees to students who transfer from community colleges to four-year institutions with the intention of earning a bachelor's degree. The foundations expect to award eight to ten two-year grants ranging from $200,000 to $600,000.

Teacher/Media Collaboration Grants

The Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award program is designed to recognize and encourage critical collaborations between teachers and media specialists to promote learning and increase student achievement. Examples of the types of collaboration that will be considered include using large-print books to improve student reading scores, increasing literacy among struggling readers, improving information literacy, using nonfiction materials in classroom libraries to support reading, and integrating electronic and print reference resources into classroom learning. Grants of $2,500 will be made.

Best Buy teams across the United States select non-profit organizations that give teens access to opportunities through technology to help them excel in school and develop 21st century skills. Grants range between $4,000 and $6,000.

K-12 Youth Education Programs

The Kinder Morgan Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in Tucson for programs that benefit K-12 youth and have a focus on academic programs, including tutoring, arts education programs, or environmental education programs that work with local schools and meet curriculum standards. Their grants range between $1,000 and $5,000.

The mission of the Grants & Nonprofit Information Center is to provide information resources for nonprofit and community organizations to assist them in fulfilling their missions. You can visit us on the 3rd floor of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library in downtown Tucson.
