Prepare for Write a Will Month in March

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) is coordinating a public awareness campaign to increase community members' knowledge of the option to make charitable bequests within their wills. According to CFSA, last year over 40 nonprofits participated by holding a seminar. If your nonprofit is planning to hold a seminar, please submit a completed participation form no later than January 25th to PlannedGiving@cfsoaz.org or by faxing it to 520-770-1500. Contact Diane Espinoza or Lori Hoby for a form or more information at 520-545-1117. This year the Arizona Daily Star will highlight "Write a Will" month with a 20 page insert featuring nonprofits that are holding seminars. In the meantime, please check out the Center for Planned Giving for more information about how you can promote bequests and other types of planned giving donations to your nonprofit.

Social Entrepreneurship Awards

The Skoll Foundation is accepting applications for the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship. The annual awards program is designed to recognize and support social entrepreneurs anywhere in the world who are helping to solve the world's most pressing problems. The foundation seeks to support social entrepreneurs whose work has the potential for large-scale impact in a range of issues and areas, including economic and social equity, environmental sustainability, health, institutional responsibility, peace and security, and tolerance, justice, and human rights. To be considered, organizations must have a tested and proven social innovation that addresses an issue of critical importance and is positioned for large-scale impact.

Film Preservation Grants

Deadline: February 10, 2012 (registration)
The National Film Preservation Foundation is accepting applications for the spring round of its Basic Preservation Grants. These grants are awarded to nonprofit and public institutions for laboratory work to preserve culturally and historically significant film materials. The grant must be used to pay for new laboratory work involving the creation of new film preservation elements (which may include sound tracks) and two new public access copies, one of which must be a film print. Awards generally range from $1,000 to $15,000 in cash and/or laboratory services.

Contemporary Art Exhibitions Funded

Deadline: March 1, 2012 (Letter of Intent)
The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation's Exhibition Award supports innovative art exhibitions throughout the United States that challenge convention through the exploration of critical ideas in contemporary art. Curators partnered with an established nonprofit exhibition space are encouraged to apply for the awards, which range from $50,000 to $150,000. Awards are intended to fund exhibitions at the beginning stage of their development and to provide the curator with the support needed to fully explore the concept and realize the exhibition.

Funding for American Art Exhibitions

In recognition of the importance of experiencing original works of art, the Terra Foundation for American Art supports exhibitions that enlarge the understanding and appreciation of historical American art made between 1500 and 1980. Exhibitions that take place only in the United States but outside of Chicago must present historical American art in an international context and reach a scholarly audience. Typical past grants ranged from $10,000 to $50,000.

Awards for Successful Immigrant Integration Initiatives

The Migration Policy Institute's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy has announced that it is accepting applications for the 2012 E Pluribus Unum Prizes. The national awards program provides $50,000 prizes annually to exceptionally successful immigrant integration initiatives. The program is designed to highlight and reward outstanding efforts that help immigrants and their children join the mainstream of U.S. society or that bring immigrants and native-born Americans together to build stronger, more cohesive communities.

Grants Enhance Collections and Archives

The purpose of Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives, an initiative of the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), is to overcome the pervasive lack of knowledge about special collections and archives and to make information about these materials accessible to scholars and students. Through this initiative, grants are provided to institutions holding collections of high scholarly value that are difficult or impossible to locate through finding aids. Award recipients will create descriptive information for their hidden collections that will be linked to all other projects funded by this grant in order to form a federated environment that can be built upon over time. Grants are expected to be made between $75,000 to $500,000.

Grants for Arts Organizations

The National Endowment for the Arts is accepting grant applications for its Challenge America Fast-Track program which offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations, including those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted above also must be present. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development. Grants will be made in the amount of $10,000 and must have at least $10,000 in matching support.

Education Grants

The Wolslager Foundation provides grants to organizations in Pima County related to education of children and for higher education. Past grants have ranged from $10,000 to $125,000, with most being between $10,000 to $30,000. Please send five copies of a one page letter of intent along with a copy of your IRS tax-exempt determination letter dated within the last five years to the Foundation at P. O. Box 1191, San Angelo, TX 76902.For more information, please visit any branch of the Pima County Public Library and search the grants databases using the foundation's name or use the free Foundation Finder to review past 990 filings from your office.

Employment Programs for People with Disabilities Funded

Deadline: February 3, 2012
The Kessler Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of people with physical disabilities caused by stroke, multiple sclerosis, injuries to the brain and spinal cord, and other cognitive or neuromuscular disabilities. The Foundation's Signature Employment Grants Program funds cutting-edge, non-traditional solutions that increase employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities. These solutions may include new pilot initiatives, demonstration projects, or other social ventures that lead to the generation of new ideas to solve unemployment. Preference will be given to interventions that overcome specific employment barriers related to long-term dependence on public assistance, advance competitive employment, or launch a social enterprise project. Funded projects must be collaborative, serve a large geographic area, and include multiple funding partners and stakeholders. Grants of $100,000 to $250,000 per year for up to two years are available to nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies throughout the U.S.

K-12 Math and Science Programs Recognized

The Intel Schools of Distinction program, an initiative of the Intel Foundation, recognizes U.S. K-12 schools that have demonstrated excellence in math and science education through innovative teaching and learning environments. To be considered, schools must develop an environment and curricula that meet or exceed benchmarks put forth by national mathematics and science content standards. Six winners will be selected from the 18 finalists and one of these winners will be selected as the Star Innovator. Finalists will receive a $5,000 grant, winners a $10,000 grant, and the Star Innovator will receive a $15,000 grant. All selected schools also receive a trip to Washington, DC, for a four-member student team.

Youth Environmental Grants

Grants are made for activities that conform to the mission of the Captain Planet Foundation which is to: promote and support high-quality educational programs that enable children and youth to understand and appreciate our world through learning experiences that engage them in active, hands-on projects to improve the environment in their schools and communities. Preferential consideration is given to requests seeking seed funding of $500 or less and to applicants who have secured at least 50% matching or in-kind funding for their projects. Captain Planet Foundation will on occasion consider grants up to $2,500.
