IRS Revoked 659 Tucson Nonprofits' Tax-Exempt Status
The IRS has started publishing lists of nonprofits that have had their tax-exempt status automatically revoked due to failure to file an information return or notice with the IRS for three consecutive years. Of approximately 275,000 nonprofits nationwide who had their tax-exempt status revoked, 659 of these were based in Tucson and additional nonprofits were affected throughout Pima County. If your nonprofit's tax exempt status has been revoked, you can visit the National Council for Nonprofit's website for additional information and tools to help you regain your tax-exempt status. The IRS has also instigated a special program to help nonprofits regain their tax-exempt status.

Better Men Better World Awards

Deadline: July 6, 2011
The Gentlemen's Fund provides awards to recognize men who are striving for the betterment of society through charitable work, volunteerism, and community involvement. Nominations may be made by a man's friend, family member, a community activist. Self-nominations are also accepted. A grant of $10,000 will be donated to an accredited 501(c)(3) charity of the winner's choice. Grants of $2,500 each will be donated to the four finalists' charities of choice.

Arts & Culture
Performing Ensembles

Deadline: June 30, 2011
Funds are available from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music for general operating support or project support for professional performing ensembles with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American music and with plans to continue that commitment. Individuals, student ensembles, festivals and presenters without a core ensemble are not eligible. Grants will not be made for the purpose of commissioning composers. Requests from dance companies are eligible, but only for costs associated with live performances of music by contemporary American composers of concert music. In general, grants range from $1,000 to $20,000.

Dreyfus Foundation Arts & Cultural Grants

Deadline: July 10, 2011
The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation provides support for museums, cultural, performing, and visual arts programs, schools, hospitals, educational and skills training projects, and programs for youth, seniors, and people who are handicapped. Recent past rants have ranged between $5,000 and $25,000. To apply, send a three page proposal with a 200 word summary of the project, a copy of the project budget, and your IRS determination letter to the foundation % Mary P. Arts & Performing Arts in AZ

Deadline: September 15, 2011
The Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation provides funds for arts and performing arts projects throughout Arizona. Typical grants fall between $5,000 and $30,000. European Art & Architecture

Deadline: October 15, 2011
The foundation supports projects relating to scholarly European art and architecture history projects, art conservation, digital resources relating to art history, and other projects relating to art history that fall outside of these three program areas. Recent grants have ranged from $10,000 to $97,000.

Academic Arts & Cultural Projects

Deadline: None
The E.L. Wiegand Foundation provides grants to education institutions (including museums) for academic arts and cultural projects. Applying organizations must have been in existence for at least five years. Recent arts and cultural grants have ranged from $1,000 to $600,000. To apply, an informational booklet outlining the Foundation's grant criteria is available on request. After reviewing the booklet, prospective applicants should submit a Letter of Inquiry which briefly describes the organization and the proposed request. Grants Promote Financial Literacy

Deadline: June 30, 2011
The National Credit Union Foundation makes Financial Education Grants to support credit union programs for the purpose of increasing the capacity of underserved low-wealth markets. Priority is given to projects that provide a path to financial services and economic self-sufficiency for the targeted audience. Credit unions, as well as organizations that partner with credit unions, are eligible to apply. Projects should leverage funding from other sources, have a plan for sustainability, and demonstrate potential to be replicated by other credit unions.

Academic & Vocational Projects

Deadline: June 23, 2011
The TJX Foundation supports education programs that provide academic and vocational opportunities for the disadvantaged, including early intervention, mentoring, tutoring, GED and college coursework as well as programs that teach people to speak, read and write English. Grants generally range from $10,000 to $150,000.

Funds for the Dissemination of Children's Programs

Deadline: July 15, 2011
The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation supports organizations that contribute to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare of children through the dissemination of information about new and innovative programs designed to benefit youth, or through the dissemination of information already possessed by well-established organizations. Grant requests should have the potential of helping American children in a broad geographic area (more than one state).

Young Teen Education & Life Skills

Deadline: August 1, 2011
The Best Buy Children's Foundation Community Grants program allows teams of Best Buy employees across the U.S. to select nonprofit organizations working to help teens excel in school and develop life and leadership skills. Best Buy seeks applications from organizations that have current 501(c)(3) tax status and serve a diverse population of young teens in the areas of learning, life skills, and leadership. Special consideration will be given to programs that provide youth with access to opportunity through technology. Grant amounts will average between $4,000 and $6,000 and will not exceed $10,000. The online grant application submission process will open on July 1, 2011.

Literacy for Adults and Their Children

Deadline: September 9, 2011
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy's 2012 National Grant competition supports nonprofits working to develop or expand projects designed to promote the literacy skills of adult primary caregivers and their children. Applicants must operate an instructional literacy program that has been in existence for at least two years and must include one or more of the following components: literacy for adults, parent education, pre-literacy or literacy instruction for children pre-K to grade 3, and/or intergenerational literacy activities. A total of approximately $650,000 will be awarded; no grant request should exceed $65,000.

The mission of the Grants & Nonprofit Information Center is to provide information resources for nonprofit and community organizations to assist them in fulfilling their missions. You can visit us on the 3rd floor of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library in downtown Tucson.
