Free Nonprofit Events

The Grants & Nonprofit Info Center is hosting many activities in the upcoming months. If you missed the January workshop, join us on April 19th for Proposal Writing Basics for an introduction to writing private grant proposals. We're also hosting a special event on May 6th called Find Help For Your Nonprofit featuring organizations that can help you strengthen your nonprofit's management and fundraising abilities. As always, we have monthly Grants Databases Open Labs where you can get hands-on assistance looking for money for your nonprofit projects on April 15th and May 13th. Kresge Arts in Tucson ll P.L.A.C.E. Initiative Grants

Deadline: April 8, 2011

The Kresge Art in Tucson ll P.L.A.C.E. Initiative Grants are designed to leverage and enhance resources and talent to plan and implement neighborhood scaled cultural preservation and development projects through the arts. This could take the form of community arts practices which incorporate "place-making", public art, cultural celebrations and festivals, community events that include opportunities for community engagement, culturally based civic dialogue, programs that engage youth, traditional arts apprenticeships, and heritage practices, other manifestations of "informal" arts or "phases" of projects thereof.

Native Arts & Cultures Foundation

Deadline: April 29, 2011 (Letter of intent)

American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian artists and organizations are eligible to apply for the following programs: The Artist and Community Collaboration Initiative provides support for projects that use the making of art to help strengthen a community, draw attention to an important issue, or engage community members in new ways. The Artist Networks and Convenings Initiative focuses on organizations presenting arts conferences, convening groups of artists, or supporting artist residencies to develop connections between artists from different regions, across disciplines, or who share in the same practices. The Strengthening the Arts and Cultures Infrastructure Initiative offers grants to arts-focused organizations that are embedded within their communities, have a strong regional presence, and/or offer national programming.

Foundation for Contemporary Arts

Deadline: May 2, 2011

Organizations with activities in dance, music/sound, performance art/theater, poetry, and the visual arts that provide opportunities for artists to present their work or offer artists professional services may apply to FCA for assistance. Grants of not more than $5,000 are awarded annually. Grants are made for specific project or general operating support.

Cinereach Film Production Grant Program

Deadline: June 1, 2011 (Letter of inquiry)

Cinereach seeks to support films that utilize cinematic artistry and storytelling to provide insight and spark dialogue, challenge prejudice and advance human rights, discover humanity and hope, and foster global community.

Art & Underrepresented Communities

Deadline: None

The Nathan Cummings Foundation's Arts & Culture program aims to create a stronger and more socially just society by building the field of Art and Social Justice and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities. They support four areas of interest, including: community-based artistic and cultural projects that illuminate social and economic justice issues; convenings and training programs for artists, cultural workers and community members that impart information and skills that can be used to achieve social change; diverse media and innovative delivery systems that document and disseminate the work of the field; and public policies that strengthen artistic and cultural communities and enable creators and their collaborators to create broad alliances in pursuit of common goals.

Literacy & Education
Student Achievement Program Grants

Deadline: April 15, 2011

Pearson Education and the National Middle School Association (NMSA) are supporting student achievement programs. Teams that Make a Difference grants up to $5,000 will be made to teams of teachers, administrators or parents who have created a program that focuses on student achievement.

Snapdragon Book Foundation

Deadline: April 15, 2011

The Foundation provides funds to improve school libraries for disadvantaged children. Grant are awarded to public, private, and experimental schools. Grants awarded in 2010 ranged from $800 to $8,500. To apply, complete the form available on their website.

Seed Money for Music, Education, and Social Justice Programs

Deadline: May 6 (for required telephone eligibility conversation)

The Sparkplug Foundation primarily supports nonprofit organizations that are proposing start-up projects in the fields of music, education, and grassroots organizing. In the Music category, the Foundation supports emerging professional musicians or music-development programs. In Education and Teaching, the Foundation funds projects that deal with "the whole student" and with learning as a community activity. Through Grassroots Organizing, the Foundation encourages activist strategies for addressing institutional injustices and for building a reasoned, just society. The Foundation also provides limited support for projects in Israel that involve Palestinian communities. The next application deadline is May 20, 2011. A telephone conversation to determine eligibility must be held by May 6, 2011 in order to initiate the application process.

Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries

Deadline: December 31, 2011

The foundation makes grants of up to $6,000 to update, extend, and diversify book collections of school libraries. Grant requests may support library book collections and magazine/serial copies and subscriptions; requests for staffing, shelving, furniture, equipment, software, videos, classroom book sets, or any kind of book guides, tests, or exams will not be honored. Grants are made to individual schools only; eligible schools must have a minimum of 50 percent of its student body qualifying for federal Free or Reduced Lunch program funds.

Secondary and Higher Education Reform

Deadline: None

The Carnegie Corporation of New York accepts letters of inquiry to support programs to develop high-performing systems of public secondary schools with these characteristics: high standards, accountability, data-driven management and instruction, high quality leaders and teachers, school designs that maximize students' engagement with education, and academically rigorous curriculum. Their three areas of interest include innovation (new designs for schools, colleges and education systems), strengthening human capital, and building knowledge and affecting policy.

The mission of the Grants & Nonprofit Information Center is to provide information resources for nonprofit and community organizations to assist them in fulfilling their missions. You can visit us on the 3rd floor of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library in downtown Tucson.
