Thanks to generous funding from the Massachusetts Bays Program, the Saugus River Watershed Council is working in partnership with the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries to conduct a smelt spawning habitat survey of the Saugus River and Shute Brook from March through May.
Volunteers scanning the riverbed with waders and sampling poles have already found hundreds of smelt eggs in both the Saugus River and Shute Brook. Results of this important research project will inform our efforts to protect and restore habitat in the watershed.
