Whistleblowers to Receive River Stewardship Award
Join the Saugus River Watershed Council in honoring Brady Howard and Octavio Frietas as they receive our River Stewardship Award for their role as 'whistleblowers' in the case which resulted in a $7.5 million settlement by the Massachusetts Attorney General's office against Wheelabrator to resolve allegations of environmental violations at their waste incineration facilities in Saugus and other locations in Massachusetts earlier this year.
According to the settlement reached last May, Wheelabrator Saugus allegedly failed to properly treat ash prior to disposal, allowed ash to be released through a hole in the roof of their Saugus facility, emptied contaminated wastewater into wetlands, and failed to report spilling 8,000 gallons of ash sludge into their parking lot and wetlands that are part of the Rumney Marshes Area of Critical Environmental Concern.
The Awards will be presented at the Saugus River Watershed Council's annual meeting and dinner on Wednesday, November 16th at the Hilltop Steakhouse in Saugus. For more information, see article below or register online now
