Dear members and friends,

Thanks to generous financial support and volunteer efforts from members like you, the Saugus River Watershed Council is making a difference by protecting and restoring the natural resources of the watershed.  Please help us continue our important work during 2011 by contributing to this Annual Appeal.

During 2010, more than 1,200 students learned about the relationship between local watershed protection and global climate change while participating in our classroom and field-based environmental education programs.  These innovative programs continue to be provided free to schools and youth groups in our 11 watershed communities -- Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Wakefield, Lynnfield, Melrose, Malden, Everett, Peabody, Reading and Stoneham.

Here are some photos from our new Climate Change Awareness Curriculum launched this fall with generous support from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust.  In photos, students from Brickett Elementary School in Lynn conduct research at Rumney Marsh and students from the Lynn Woods Elementary School in Lynn learn about the relationship between sea level rise and salt marshes through classroom experiments.

With your support, we will also continue to work in partnership with local communities, the Division of Marine Fisheries, the National Park Service, the Lynn Water and Sewer Commission, and other agencies to evaluate and restore water quality and fish populations in the Saugus River.  This year, we will also expand our efforts to promote sustainable development practices throughout the region.

Your continued support is more important than ever as we seek to protect vegetated buffer zones, drinking water supplies, wetlands and wildlife habitat -- while contending with flooding, increased stormwater pollution, extended dry periods, changes in vegetation, and other negative impacts of climate change at the local level.  We sincerely appreciate all of your volunteer and financial contributions and we look forward to working with you to protect and enjoy the Saugus River watershed this year.

Wishing you and your families a happy and healthy 2011!
