Dear ,
Wow! Our 35th year is about ready to come to a close. What a remarkable time at KCSARC! As I look back over the year, I think of some of the things that I'm most proud of:
- KCSARC's Board of Directors completed and approved a new five-year strategic plan which will provide us with a strong roadmap to reach our goal of ending sexual assault.
- Our requests for services continue to increase and our highly-skilled staff meets this demand with dedication and compassion.
- You continue to stand with KCSARC and provide support both financially and through your gifts of time; whether volunteering, speaking to your legislators, or telling your neighbors and colleagues about the work of KCSARC.
We know our goal of a world free of sexual assault is a lofty one, but we also know if we all work together we can end the silence! Thank you for partnering with us on this journey. Best wishes to you and your families for a happy holiday season and great start to 2012!
Sincerely,

Mary Ellen Stone
Executive Director

One Mother's Story
When Jill called KCSARC's 24-hour Resource Line in a panic just minutes after hearing that her daughter, Sarah, had been sexually abused by Jill's boyfriend for months, she did not know what to do. As she made this call she was recounting her own sexual abuse as a child and said, "I thought I dealt with it. I thought it was behind me." Those are sad words coming from anyone; they are even more devastating when it comes from the mouth of a mother whose child just reported being sexually abused. Her child's words sent her reeling to a time 23 years earlier when she herself was assaulted by an uncle. Jill was so thankful that her child would not have to hold the secret of abuse for years as she did.
Before she knew it, Jill and Sarah were connected with a legal advocate to help them maneuver in the criminal justice system and a counselor to help Sarah's healing begin. The case against the boyfriend lasted six months until he pled out to a misdemeanor charge. He received a sentence of 23 months, served two and was put on four years of probation, during which time he was to receive therapy for both addiction and sexual behavior issues. KCSARC's legal advocate was there every step of the way with Jill and Sarah. She attended preliminary hearings with them, went to meetings with the prosecutor, was present for Sarah's child interview and helped them understand why the offender was able to plead out on a lower charge.
As this was going on, Sarah was also attending therapy at KCSARC. After every therapy session, 6-year-old Sarah shares with her mom the work that she is doing in therapy. When Jill attended the first counseling appointment with her daughter, she was surprised to learn that KCSARC also provided her with a parent educator to help her understand the healing process that her daughter would be going through, as well as work through her own emotions related to the abuse.
As they have moved through the criminal trial and through therapy, Jill sees her daughter's smile return. Seeing her child heal from sexual abuse has brought about healing for herself as well. Jill remarked, "I feel as though I am healing as I see Sarah heal. Thank you."
