Alliance Renee and Meyer Luskin Academy Celebrated in Naming Ceremony
 | |
Renee and Meyer Luskin cut the ribbon at the Luskin Academy Naming Ceremony |
Alliance Renee and Meyer Luskin Academy High School was officially dedicated with a naming ceremony on September 18th. More than 700 Alliance students, parents, and supporters attended the event to celebrate the Luskin's and the newly named school.
California State Senator Curren Price, Los Angeles City Councilmember Bernard Parks, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy, and founding Alliance board member Bill Ouchi all expressed their appreciation for the Luskin's and their constant dedication to improving public education in Los Angeles. Additionally, Luskin Academy students Cheyenne Davis and Fatima Larin, and parent Terri Guidry shared their positive Alliance experiences.
In addition to their generous financial support that made this naming possible, the Luskins have broadened the students' horizons by taking them on a campus tour of UCLA, and arranging for them to attend the inaugural Luskin Lecture for Thought Leadership at UCLA where they met President Bill Clinton, the event's keynote speaker.
"We are so grateful for Renee and Meyer Luskin," says Luskin Academy Principal Rosalio Medrano. "Their commitment to our school is more than just financial; they have a genuine interest in our students and do everything they can to support them and help them succeed." |

Loyola Marymount University |
This summer, 33 Alliance middle and high school students participated in the Summer Business Institute (SBI) of the Academy of Business Leadership. Participating Alliance students joined SBI scholars from 54 middle and high schools in 18 school districts across Southern California.
The students learned basic skills, ethics, and processes associated with business, finance, entrepreneurship, and transformational leadership. They participated in over 178 hours of instruction led by MBA professionals from Columbia University and others, as well as university instructors, and prominent corporate and civic leaders. They also attended 21 field trips to eight Fortune 500 corporations and leading companies where they met with senior executives in boardrooms and learned about their fields of expertise.
"This program gets you connected with people you never would have gotten to meet otherwise," said Malik Barr from Alliance Renee and Meyer Luskin Academy High School. He adds that, "this experience has prepared me for what college will be like and made me a more transformational leader."
This month all 21 Alliance schools are nominating students from grades 8-11 to participate in the newly-named 2013 Summer Business and Leadership Institute. To learn more about the program, you can visit the Academy of Business Leadership website by clicking here. |

This year the winning bulletin board came from Alliance Jack H. Skirball Middle School. The team was led by Anthony Urzua, former Alliance Judy Ivie Burton Technology Academy student and current parent coordinator at Skirball.
"A well-designed parent bulletin board provides valuable information about what is happening at the school," says Alliance Director of Parent Engagement Mary Silva, "they are an important part of enforcing our core value of engaging Parents as Partners."

Angelica Waner poses with her acceptance letter to Brown University |
I have been part of Alliance College-Ready Public schools since the sixth grade.
My senior year of high school I decided to apply early decision to my dream school, Brown University, and was accepted! I am currently undecided in my major, but am leaning towards the Humanities, either literature or history. Right now I believe I want to pursue a career in journalism.
When I began as a sixth grader at Alliance Richard Merkin Middle School I had no idea that attending Brown University would be a goal for me. Before coming to an Alliance school I knew that I wanted to attend college, but I never dreamed of being accepted by such a competitive school.
My teachers definitely helped me realize the potential I had, they challenged me and helped me grow as a student and as a person. I also had wonderful counselors who truly worried about my future and did everything they could to help me. They encouraged me to aim for college and, as application time got closer, they encouraged me to apply to competitive colleges. My teachers and counselors were always available for any questions I had or help I needed.
If I had not attended an Alliance school I don't know where I would be going to college in the fall. I benefitted greatly from the small setting, the individual attention, and the great relationships that I had with the teachers, counselors and staff at the Alliance. |
