MENA region nurtures knowledge economy

 
125x125 tnxtsv adThe Middle East, North Africa region is emerging as a resilient growth market with promises of renewed market growth and technology innovation.
 

The MENA region, extends from Moroco in northwest Africa to Iran southwest Asia and includes all the Arab Middle East and North Africa countries, as well as Cyprus, Iran, Israel and Turkey.
 

According to several recently published reports the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is seeing a surge in activity aimed at developing develop the knowledge economy and strengthening links between education, research and development (R&D), industry, information and communication technology and entrepreneurship.
 
In schools and higher education systems also, greater attention is being paid to vocational training and curricula are being overhauled to upgrade teaching of mathematics and science and to encourage a culture of R&D and innovation. Full story here.
 
 
New innovation economy rattles economic development world
 
125x125 tnxtsv adA new innovation economy is emerging from the ashes of the global  crisis, turning the age-old practice of economic development upside down and challenging international organizations and regions to embrace an adapt-or-perish strategy in the face of new economic realities.

In this brave new world, knowledge is king, and by extension, universities, and their like, are becoming central players in an emerging, global revitalization network. Innovation is the new currency of commerce.

Called a "new paradigm" by some, this new economic order also celebrates geographic location as a center of both knowledge and connectedness.

The latter is is a very different algorithm from the sum-of-all-incentives equation that has driven economic development decisions for decades, if not centuries, observers note. Full story here.

 
Internet savvy Turkey rides innovation wave

Several Turkish entrepreneurs -- running thriving companies in the clean tech, networking gear and IPTV areas -- are featured in the report.

Turkey's startup activity is the result of "a relatively healthy economy, a highly educated pool of software and electrical engineers, a supportive government that issues R&D tax credits to companies, and booming Internet usage."

Internet users in Turkey are ranked among the five most engaged online populations worldwide, based on the time they spend online. Research firm comScore ranks Turkey as the fifth-largest Internet market in wider Europe, behind Germany, France, Russia, and Britain. Full story here.
