31 Leadership Tips for the Dog Days of August

By Jim Sullivan Copyright 2009  JS Mug Shot

August marks the end of summer and beginning of Fall. This is a critical month for leaders as companies transition from the 3rd to the final quarter of 2009 and summer business gives way to Autumn. In the foodservice and retail industries that means significant changes in staffing, dining habits and operations. So be ready to change with the times or the times will change you! The next 31 days are full of opportunity to pump up (or save) 3rd quarter performance and profits, and so here are 31 leadership thoughts for each day this month to keep you focused. Read 'em and reap!
  1. Knowledge, not time, is money. Teach someone something new today.
  2. Hire s-lo-w, fire fast.
  3. Talent is more important than cost. It's the most talented, not the least talented who are continually trying to improve.
  4. Work on Me First: the only person you can truly prod, inspire, shape with any degree of success is yourself
  5. Training is a philosophy not a department.
  6. Don't train in "general," train in specific. Everyday ask yourself: Who or What is my training target today?
  7. Manage your business's culture and that culture will manage your business.
  8. Focus first on where the company and the customer meet and then build your solutions outward from that moment-of-truth
  9. Don't just hire "team members; assemble a castBusinesspeople
  10. Know-why trumps know-how Good leaders try to motivate their employees, great ones try to inspire them.
  11. Purpose-not just personality-must be used to lead. For a company with a cause, change is not a defensive tactic, it's a way forward
  12. The function of leadership is to produce more leaders not more followers.
  13. The foodservice industry is like an escalator; you can move up or you can move down, but you can't remain still.
  14. If you're standing still, you're walking backwards.
  15. Audit what you buy: you can't compete on price if you can't compete on cost.
  16. Ask yourself: where is my target customer group when they are not in my business?
  17. If you beat your competition to the best employees, those best employees will help you beat your competition.  -Mel Kleiman
  18. Your team members are not problems to be solved, but a person to be understood.
  19. The hiring focus should be on the skills of the individuals you're considering and their attitudes toward learning and development.
  20. Labor is not your biggest "controllable" expense. RETENTION is.
  21. Service is our invisible product. If the only thing to purchase at a restaurant were food, it would be called a grocery store. -Chris Peck
  22. Today, figure out what are the 5 things that customers love most and hate most about us?
  23. Develop your action plan before you get into crisis, so you don't become a prisoner of events.
  24. You can afford decreased profits if you have cash flow, but the reverse is not true.
  25. Buying cheap merchandise to save money is like stopping a clock to save time.
  26. Don't operate in a state of "suspended animation" while waiting for improvements to materialize.
  27. Teach the team the basics: how to read a simple P&L, how to read a paycheck so they begin to think like owners do.
  28. Always invest in the performer as well as the performance. Catch your people doing something right.
  29. Always choose to drive the value message over discounting. The price game is next to impossible to win
  30. Once you have a talented person in place but they're unable to deliver it's because of the systems, not the person.
  31. On this final day of the 3rd quarter, a message to low-perfomers: we will not lower our standards so that you can raise yours. Now learn how to manage your next 30 days to profitability by clicking HERE.
