Enrichment Tip of the Month

by Kris Porter

I recently got a clay pot cooker and have been experimenting with adding wine to the pot to flavor roasts, poultry and stews.  It occurred to me that instead of throwing away the wine cork, I could offer it to the parrots as a foot toy.  I will usually leave one out on the counter for a parrot to "happen" by it and think he's found a prize.  Or I put the corks into toy boxes, toy pails, or toy bowls along with other toy parts.  Usually my birds will be busy throwing everything out of their toy box or bowl eagerly searching for the nutri-berry, nut or other treat hidden in amongst the toy parts.  I have observed that instead of immediately throwing the cork aside, they stop and hold the cork and chew and shred it to pieces before throwing it to the floor or the bottom of the cage.  While this idea is probably not a new one to many parrot owners; wine corks have only recently become a popular foot toy among my flock.

May 2011
Hello Friends!

Gizzy and I are RV camping at the moment, a new experience for both of us.  We are sitting by a rushing mountain stream taking in the sights, sounds and fresh air.  I was a little nervous about bringing her along but she has been great with the exception of chewing through my iPad charger cord (add it to her hit list) during a moment of inattention. Gizzy seems thrilled with the extended one on one attention she gets in our cramped quarters.  She also particularly loves our outdoor time at the picnic table where she avidly watches the camp robbers scavenge for food while she casually munches on her lunch.

I came across a fun tidbit for my fellow iPad users, check out the free application called "Peter Parrot".    Peter is an animated parrot that repeats whatever you say and also has a few other tricks tucked under his wings.   Gizzy just sits in front of the iPad seemingly amazed that it is talking to her and I'm hoping it helps her learn to be a bit more vocal over time.

This month our feature article covers the topic of bird-safe household cleaners.  Perhaps not the most exciting topic, but one of critical importance to the health of our birds.  There are many stories on the internet of birds who have died or have become ill as the result of exposure to the chemicals and fumes from carpet, furniture, bathroom, glass and oven cleaners.  Our article presents some simple, homemade and bird-safe cleanser options that not only work well, but will also will save you money.  I hope you'll find this information helpful and useful to use in your own home and that you'll share it with everyone you know, even if they don't have birds!

Sincerely,

Deb White

Bird Safe Household Cleaners

We all have preferences as to what household cleansers we use, what we use them for and how often we use them.  Window cleaners, oven cleaners, furniture polish, drain cleaners, spot removers... the list goes on and on.  The problem is that many of these "off the shelf" cleaning products contain caustic chemicals and fumes that can be harmful and potentially deadly to your bird (and your family too!)

Just because cleaners are sold in the grocery store doesn't mean they are safe.   The components in many household cleaners are actually classified as hazardous waste.  Over 100 chemicals commonly found in our homes have been linked to a wide range of medical issues such as allergies, asthma, headaches, chronic fatigue, nervous disorders and depression.  Recent research found that the use of spray household cleaners could increase the risk of developing asthma by nearly 50 percent in humans.

Just imagine the impact on our avian companions who have the most efficient respiratory systems in all of the animal kingdom.   The result is that our birds are much more susceptible to airborne toxins.
