Enrichment Tip of the Month
by Kris Porter |
******************
Baskets make great alternate play areas for parrots. You can carry the basket with you from room to room. A good basket for this purpose is made of untreated wicker or willow. Look for baskets with wide bases and sturdy handles. You don't want the handle too high off the basket. A shorter handle will provide more balance when your bird plays on it. Tie on toys to the sides of the basket and handle for added interest and activity. You can create a foraging opportunity by filling the basket with toys, whole vegetables, fruit or nuts and anything else that your bird is particularly interested in. |

Hello Bird Lovers!
OK, I'm guilty of missing the month of April, it blew right past me and the newsletter never made it out. It's not that I didn't think about it, I just decided to spend some more time goofing off with my flock, preparing their outdoor aviary and getting some heavy duty spring cage cleaning done now that it's warm enough to drag cages outdoors for a thorough scrubbing. I'm going to try and make it up to everyone with some exciting stuff this month!
First of all, in this newsletter, we have two great columnists sharing their wisdom and humor with us. Leslie Moran provides us with insight into an avian super food and, one of my favorite writers, Patricia Sund, blesses us with another of her humourous essays on the topic of "starter birds" which also conveys a very important message.
We are also announcing our 2nd annual "Spoiled Bird" Photo Contest complete with opportunities to win prizes and a chance to have your photos turned into new jigsaw puzzles for the fun section of our site (see details below).

Discover the Most Nutritious Avian Food
by Leslie Moran
"I want to provide the best nutrition possible for my birds."
This affirmation resounds from experienced breeders, parrot rescue organizations and individual bird owners alike. What does this growing segment of avian caretakers consider the best nutrition available for parrots? They all feed sprouts, the most nutrient dense food on the planet.
Why are Sprouts so Nutritious?
When any seed, nut, grain or legume is sprouted its entire chemical composition is enhanced. Sprouting is the relatively simple process of soaking, draining and rinsing seeds until they germinate. The germinated seeds, grains and legumes must then be allowed to grow in order for them to reach their peak nutrition.

I Don't Believe in "Starter Birds"
by Patricia Sund
What is a "starter bird?" Is that like a "starter human?" Maybe that's why human babies start out small. I don't have children but I imagine that when they are small, they're easier to handle. They have no teeth so they can't bite you. They are loud and messy however, and we have to teach them everything. They can't talk and the only way they can complain to us about whatever it is that's bothering them is by crying. So maybe human babies are "starter humans." Maybe they show up that way so we can learn as they grow up and get larger.
