Enrichment Tip of the Month

by Kris Porter
 ******************

As I was getting ready to toss out a cardboard 6-pack bottled beer carrier, I remembered seeing one put to use in a Talkeetna, Alaska restaurant as a napkin and plastic flatware caddy.  I thought I could use that idea to make a simple parrot toy.

I cut some paper towel rolls in half and stuffed them with rolled newspaper.  On a few of the stuffed paper towel rolls I placed a small vine ring for added interest.  Then I put the stuffed paper towel rolls inside of the compartments on the cardboard bottle carrier.

I put the box on top of Buddy's cage to see if he would be interested in shredding the box or towel holders.  I selected the top of his cage to introduce the new toy to give Buddy opportunity to get away from it if he was frightened by it at first.

I didn't have to worry about that.  Buddy flew right to his cage to investigate the novel object I had just placed there.  He looked inside the compartments and then took out the paper towel rolls and started shredding them to pieces.

I was happy to see that the other parrots were also interested in this toy.  It is made mostly out of junk you would otherwise toss into the garbage or recycle bin and it is so easy to make - it takes no time at all.  You could also put foot toys or nuts inside the compartments along with the paper towel rolls.

I've asked the neighbors to save all their 6-pack bottle carriers for me.

Happy New Year!

Just a little fun this month....

I've pretty much given up on making New Year's Resolutions for myself.  This year I decided to assign the task to my flock.  In my fantasy world, here is what they came up with:

Zeke (25 yo African Grey)
  • Stop snatching the glasses off my mom's face when she wants to kiss my beak.
  • Stop saying "butthead" and learn how to say "I love you mom" instead.
  • Resist snapping the keys off of computer keyboards and the fun chewy buttons off of remote controls.
  • Prove to mom that money does really grow on trees so that she won't be so mad about her new leather chair and let me watch TV with her again.

Echo (14 yo Eclectus)
  • Stop flinging food all over the walls especially the pomengrante juice.
  • Stop screaming "NO" at the new puppy whenever she watches me eat.
  • Stop eating the dog's food even though every bit of food in the house is MINE!
  • Special request from Mom....stop plucking my feathers.

Pico (12 yo African Grey)

  • Remember to be nice to petsitters when they want to feed me.
  • Stop imitating the dog's whine that means "I need to go out" so that mom can relax.

Josie (12 yo Double Yellow Amazon)

  • Find a way to get rid of that darn dog so that I can be out of my cage all day!

Sky (2 yo Quaker)

  • Don't bite cheeks and toes anymore to get attention.
  • Leave my mom's jgsaw puzzles alone.

The Parrotlet Squad

  • Talk mom into letting us eat at the dinner table every night!  (Abbey, 7 yo)
  • Get that pretty blue bird in the mirror to talk back to me. (Blue Boy, 5 yo)
  • Convince the rest of the birds that I really, really am the biggest, baddest bird in the house! (Peanut, 8 yo)

Definitely wishful thinking...but fun!   What New Year's Resolutions would you like to have your bird's make?  Let us know in this month's survey, our favorite list will win a $25.00 store credit!

Have fun!
Sincerely,

Deb White
