Joshua Lyon author of the book "Pill Head" will be featured live on "The Mark Johnson Show" airing on WDEV AM550 and FM96.1 from 9-11 AM Wednesday July 21st.

PILL HEAD: The Secret Life
of a Painkiller Addict (Hyperion)

Joshua Lyon first bought Vicodin illegally, over the internet, on assignment for Jane magazine. But taking three of them at once wasn't part of the job-he did that to see what all the fuss was about. In a matter of weeks he'd blown through the first 90 and was jonesing for more. And he wasn't alone: 33 million Americans have admitted to using prescription painkillers like Vicodin, Oxycontin, and Percocet non-medically, and 7 million are currently abusing them. Click here to read more.

Judicial Audio Conference 7/28/2010

A Range of Responses to Address Underage Alcohol Offenders:  Is One Approach More Effective than Another?

This program is the seventh in a series of audio-teleconference presentations produced by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) and the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) in cooperation with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) with a focus on the relationship of the judicial and probation communities and the issues related to underage alcohol abuse.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Treatment of underage drinking offenses by the justice community, in general and in the courts, is often inconsistent.  On one end of the spectrum are aggressive penalties established in the law, which may make judges reluctant to give a young person a record.  At the opposite end are laws, which make underage alcohol issues a status offense or offer the Court little opportunity to impose meaningful penalties on adult providers who engage the justice community.  So how have jurisdictions approached these problems? What policy implications, if any, exist because of the jurisdictional approach to underage alcohol cases?  Our program will look at a range of responses applied by the justice community to address underage alcohol problems.   Our faculty will examine which strategies, or combination of strategies, are most effective in addressing these issues.

LOCATION:     Online Audio Teleconference
