Vietnam Vet Says Brattleboro Retreat Changed His Life During a Tuesday morning community breakfast at the Brattleboro Retreat on March 23, Marine Corps veteran and former Brattleboro Retreat patient Chris Casey described how his recent experience in the Retreat's Uniformed Service Program literally changed his life. Now age 63, Casey says he has finally found peace from the memories of his experiences in southeast Asia--memories that have haunted him for more than 40 years, and have played a significant part in his struggles with alcohol addiction and isolation from his family and friends.

Recovery advocates from all walks of life, all regions of Vermont, and all paths to recovery came together to show support for addiction treatment and recovery programs in Vermont.
The day began with tesimony in the House Health and Welfare Committee at 8:30 a.m. Rep. Ann Pugh , chair of the committee, invited representatives from FOR-VT and the VT Recovery Centers to educate committee members about what works to help support those in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Next, Rep. Joan Lenes announced our presence during morning annlouncements on the House floor. Joan's kind words and ehtusiasm for the recovery movement was met with standing applause by legislators and guests directed toward the dozens of recovery community members seated in the Senate seats at the front of the room. Glorious moment!
The 2010 Jack Barry Communications Award was presented by Peter Lee to Ken Libertoff, Ph.D., for his oustanding, long-time commitment to bringing awareness to addiction and mental health issues at the State House.

My Name is Bill W.
World War I veteran William Wilson has everything: loving wife, good health, Wall Street career - and a "drinking problem." Penniless overnight when the stock market crashes, Bill quickly descends into a "stormy sea of booze." Then he meets Bob Smith, an Ohio surgeon with the same "problem." Together they discover a way to stay sober...one day at a time. And their mutual triumph would soon become the world's. James Woods won a Best Actor Emmy Award for his no-holds-barred portrayal of Wilson in My Name is Bill W., the powerful true story of how two lives intersected at a crucial time - and how the resulting friendship led to the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous. With over 75,000 AA chapters worldwide, the work started by Wilson and Smith (played by James Garner) goes on everywhere, heroically...one day at a time.

Exercising Your New Rights and Benefits: The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. Tell Us How It's Working!
Over 100 million Americans and their families have new rights and benefits under the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). It took many years of advocacy for this victory and important step in ending insurance discrimination facing people with addiction. Faces & Voices is working to make the promise into real opportunities for people to get the help that they have been denied for far too long. The law went into effect on January 1, 2010 and applies to all group health plans with more than 50 employees. It is intended to end the higher co-pays and deductibles and service limitations that have restricted care for people with addiction and mental illness compared to care for other health conditions. 82 million individuals in self-insured employer health plans that are not governed by state parity laws and another 31 million in plans that are subject to state regulation are now covered. |
