What's all the buzz about ROSC? |
|
What is ROSC and what does it mean for the recovery community? ROSC is the acronym for Recovery-Oriented System of Care.
Recovery-oriented systems of care are as complex and dynamic as the process of recovery itself.
They are designed to support individuals seeking to overcome substance use problems across their lifespan. In a ROSC there will be no wrong door to recovery. Recovery-oriented systems of care need to provide "genuine, free and independent choice" among an array of treatment and recovery support options. Services should optimally be provided in flexible, unbundled packages that evolve over time to meet the changing needs of recovering individuals. Individuals should also be able to access a comprehensive array of services that are fully coordinated. For more information about ROSC, visit SAMHSA's Partners for Recovery . | |

| Greetings! |
Seasons Greetings from FOR-VT!
As I look back over 2009, there has been so much to be thankful for. Most of all, we have expanded to include three fantastic new staff members. Rita Johnson is our new Outreach Coordinator who oversees VADIC (VT Alcohol and Drug Information Clearinghouse) and VCAN (VT College Alcohol Netowrk). Marie Baril is our new Office Assistant (and Access database guru!). And Kate Burkholder, CCV Intern, has been working on merging our Speakers Bureau with the MHEI Speakers Bureau. We've also been joined by many new members who support our mission and the work we do. Welcome aboard new staff and FOR-VT members!
Advocacy and Education in Action!
We've been busy this year with offering our annual events such as the Recovery Walk, Recovery Day at the State House and the FOR-VT Annual Meeting. There were also numerous times during the last legislative session when recovery advocates testified and met with lawmakers about addiction related legislation. New this year, our Addiction Recovery Training Series (ARTS) engaged new faces from not only the substance abuse field but from related service providers such as diversion, homeless shelters, and vocational rehabilitation. This has reinforced the fact that addiction effects everyone and the collateral consequences of addiction are far reaching.
Regional and National Work
In the next week or so, you will be asked to participate in FOR-VT's online recovery support survey. This is part of an ongoing community needs assessment that helps us collect the information needed to develop programs and services. Thanks in advance for your cooperation,
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Patty McCarthy
FOR-VT Director

| FOR-VT Quarterly Meeting in Franklin County |
On December 2nd, recovery advocates from Franklin Conty and across Vermont
participated in the FOR-VT Quarterly Community Meeting at the Church of the Rock in St. Albans. Volunteers prepared a tasty spaghetti dinner and had lively discussions about recovery resources in Vermont. Special guests, Pat and Kathy Martin, of Wit's End, shared advice on forming a parent support group. The newly forming Turning Point of Franklin County gave an update as we await the new addition of a 10th recovery community center in Vermont! Join us in March for the next FOR-VT Quarterly Meeting coming to a community near you! |

Harm Reduction Technology: This public health approach to substance abuse and addiction focuses on minimizing the risks associated with drug use, whether the drug use itself is reduced or not. Widely accepted around the world, harm reduction has not been as readily accepted in the United States. This course will examine major examples of harm reduction as well as practical applications. This course will begin on December 7, 2009 and will run for four weeks (two hours per week).
Living Life on Life's Terms: Integrating Spirituality Into the Therapeutic Process with Addicted Adults: This course will explore some of the latest thinking on the value of spiritual beliefs and practices in the recovery process and how the addictions counselor can integrate a spiritual focus into treatment without pushing a particular religion or set of beliefs on the client. This course will begin on December 21, 2009 and will run for 4 weeks (two hours per week).
Developing Culturally Competent Recovery Plans - Person-Centered Planning Using the Recovery Model: This course will present an in-depth look at a recovery-centered approach and Recovery Core Values and how these may be employed in clinical practice in Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Treatment. Issues such as understanding how culture and spirituality should be used in the development of person-centered recovery planning will be explored. This course will begin January 4, 2010 and will run for five weeks (two hours per week).
Motivational Interviewing: Providing Direction and Rolling with Resistance; A highly successful treatment approach, Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person centered, guiding method of communication to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. This course, the second in a series, will focus on the application of MI. Participants will be offered opportunities to learn about, listen for and respond to client sustain and change talk. This course will begin on January 4, 2010 and will run for four weeks (two hours per week).
The Impact of Chemical Dependency on The Family; Chemical dependency impacts all members of a family, not just the person using the drugs and alcohol. As a result, it is extremely important for counselors to understand the roles each family member plays in the disease and recovery process. This course will begin on January 11, 2010 and will run for four weeks (two hours per week).
Dual Diagnosis Treatment: A Map to Recovery-Part 2; This course will review criteria for programs serving the dually diagnosed population; review a number of "best practices" for treating this population; and discuss treatment modalities that can be blended to work most effectively with the dually diagnosed population. This course will begin on January 11, 2010 and will run for five weeks (two hours per week).
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This treatment approach has gained widespread application in the treatment of a variety of mental health issues, including substance abuse. This course will begin on January 18, 2010 and will run for four weeks (two hours per week).
Understanding the Language of Warriors: Substance Abuse Treatment for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans While substance abuse professionals may understand the cycle of addiction and treatment interventions, unique factors are associated with survival at war and codes of military membership that can impede progress for the recovering client. This four week course will focus on understanding military cultural beliefs about the use of alcohol and drugs. This course will begin on January 18, 2010 and run for four weeks (two hours per week).
