Governor Douglas will Host Regional Forum on Health Reform
Montpelier, VT - At the request of President Barack Obama, Governor Jim Douglas will host one of five regional forums on health reform at the University of Vermont's Davis Center on Tuesday, March 17.  Governor Douglas will be joined by Governor Deval Partrick (D-MA), officials from the Obama Administration and other guests to discuss health care reform. "This is a great opportunity for Vermont to showcase our groundbreaking efforts on health care reform to our region and the nation," Governor Douglas said.  "By focusing on prevention to lower cost and increasing access to health care for more residents, Vermont continues to lead the nation on this important issue," he continued. The regional forum on health reforms is part of a nationwide effort by President Obama to bring the health care discussion to all areas of the country. "Lowering the cost of health care for all Vermonters, indeed all Americans, is a goal I share with our partners in Washington and my fellow Governors throughout the country," the Governor said.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 7, 2009) - New research from the University of Virginia Health System could help explain why some alcoholics are more severe drinkers than others.   A UVA team has found strong evidence that the serotonin transporter gene, SLC6A4, plays a significant role in influencing drinking intensity among alcohol-dependent individuals. It is no longer federal policy to beat up on hippies- Whiff of change in US medical marijuana policy The Associated Press, Saturday, February 7, 2009, The White House won't say it explicitly. Neither will the Drug Enforcement Administration. Yet there is a whiff in the air that U.S. policy is about to change when it comes to medical marijuana. The message is clear, said UCLA professor Mark Kleiman, a former Justice Department official and an expert on crime and drug policy. Read full article HERE
ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITY
Public Hearing on Revenue Situation  Montpelier, VT
The Vermont House Committee on Ways and Means is holding a public hearing on Tuesday, March 17th from 2:45-4:30 pm and from 6:30-8 pm in Room 11 of the Vermont State House.  The purpose of the public hearing is to receive testimony from Vermonters concerning the revenue situation facing the state of Vermont.  Vermont's projected budget exceeds the projected revenue.  Even with the federal stimulus dollars, we are looking at a deficit in the FY 10 budget and a projected $200 million plus deficit in the 2011 budget.  We need your creative and honest help as we address this challenge.  This need can be met through reductions, efficiencies, or revenues or a combination of the three. Setting aside the first two (they are not the purview of the House Committee on Ways and Means), the questions are: Are added revenues appropriate? If so, what might they be?  In framing your thoughts, please think about what level of governmental services Vermonters need?  If that costs more than our current revenue system raises, what should be done about it?  Please keep your comments focused on the purview of the Committee on Ways & Means as this committee is responsible for the revenues of the state, not spending decisions made in the budget.  The Vermont Constitution Article 9 partially reads "...previous to any law being made to raise a tax, the purpose for which it is to be raised ought to appear evident to the Legislature to be of more service to community than the money would be if not collected." if you are unable to attend, please feel free to send your comments to Roz Daniels, Committee on Ways & Means, c/o Legislative Council, 115 State Street, Montpelier, VT, 05633 or RDaniels@leg.state.vt.us by March 19th at noon.
