Last month we discussed setting up your main seating area in the living room around your focal point - either a fireplace, view or television. These same principles work whether you are selling your house or just giving your own home some attention.
By pulling the furniture seating out away from the walls (if the room is large enough), you create a cozy conversation area. Oftentimes, however, that leaves areas against the walls and/or corners with no furniture. What do you do with them?
Blank walls can be used functionally and beautifully by putting "workhorses" against them - bookshelves or enclosed cabinets, giving you extra storage. One of my clients used something like this wall unit set from
Pottery Barn.
Here is an example from my own current living room. The sofas are perpendicular to the fireplace, leaving room on either side of the hearth for furniture (the sofas are about 2-1/2 feet from the fireplace wall).

Disclaimer: I dislike these harsh white walls, but since we recently moved in, painting hasn't made it to the top of the to-do list yet. Color selection newsletter coming in the future hopefully! Okay, back to the business at hand.
Corners are wonderful places to set up a small reading nook. I love getting up early in the morning when no one else is around and spending some time in this comfortable reclining chair.
