Greetings!

John & Stasi Eldredge point out the function & purposes of beauty in their book "Captivating."  If you've ever had your breath taken away by an incredibly gorgeous scene or have a favorite lovely place to get away, no doubt you can relate to at least some of what they say:

Beauty is:
  • Powerful
  • Healing
  • Moving
  • Nurturing
  • Inspiring
  • Purifying
  • Strengthening
  • Renewing
If it truly is all those things, then we need to do whatever we can to surround ourselves with beauty.

The definition of beauty from Dictionary.com is:

The quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (such as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).

We experience beauty in many different areas of life - the love of our family & friends, spending time in nature, visiting an art museum, listening to our favorite music, or sitting in our favorite spot with a good book.

Here are some simple ways to intentionally surround yourself with beauty to nourish you:

 1)  Get out into nature.
Enjoy the beach for a walk, a sunset or just play.
Walk or camp at Redondo Beach's Wilderness Park.
Go camping & enjoy the night sky.
Hit the fun "motorcycle" roads in the Santa Monica Mountains or Angeles Crest Highway.
Take a picnic to the Malibu hills.

2)  Bring nature into your home - real or fake flowers and greenery, twigs, stones, brick, sisal rugs, etc.  Trader Joe's is a great source of inexpensive fresh flowers.

Living Room

3)  Enjoy well-crafted words in poetry or books like Anne of Green Gables and Heidi.

4)  Music has the power to uplift us, help us to cry, comfort our hearts, or to get our bodies moving!  Make the most of it by making music a regular part of your life - attend symphonies & concerts, and play in your home and car.

5)  Enjoy your children to the fullest.  Regardless of their age, there is so much beauty in our children.  Smile at them, laugh with them, dance with them.  Enjoy them!

6)  Embrace womanhood (especially if you're a woman!).  We women have the privilege to bring even more beauty into the world - through our love, by radiating joy, our appreciation, and our physical beauty.

And lastly.....

7)  Bring beauty into your home.

a)  Make sure you have a good conversation area in your home to nurture good communication with eye contact.  Place sofas or chairs facing each other, perhaps with a lovely area rug to pull the grouping together.

b)  When you purchase large upholstered pieces, keep them solid or very subtly patterned in neutral (nature) colors.  According to Christopher Lowell, that way you can use them in different rooms or change your whole color scheme by simply changing the color of your pillows, throws and other accessories.

c)  Make sure nearly every room has some form of greenery, whether used for fill-ins in booksheves, a nice tree in the corner or plants & faux flower arrangements on tabletops or plantstands.  Greenery completes a room.

By practicing an "attitude of gratitude" and truly enjoying the beautiful things in our life, we will bless others and encourage them to think about the good stuff!
