"Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor"
Reflecting on the readings and reality The readings for the 25th and26thSundays in Ordinary Time center around those who are minoritas-- the poor on the margins of society. The
readings from Amos in both weeks exhort the listeners to attend to the LORD,
who will not forget their debauchery nor will forget their abuse of the needy
and poor. The psalms in both weeks
speak of the generosity of the LORD who will life up the poor and protect those
on the margins: "the fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the
wicked he thwarts" and "the LORD raises up those who were bowed down." We have heard two thing then-the poor
are being neglected by those around them, and that the LORD will provide for
them and lift them up.
From
this, where do the Gospel readings invite us to? The gospel for the 25th Sunday is the story of
the rich man's steward, who cancels his master's debts. The gospel for the 26th
Sunday tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus, the beggar outside his
door. When Lazarus dies, he is
carried away to Abraham's bosom, while the rich man suffers "in torment". The rich man asks Abraham for
assistance, just a dip of water on fingers, and Abraham replies "remember that
you received what was good during your lifetime...now, ... you are tormented." The
rich man's sin was not that he received what was good, but rather, that he
ignored the outcast, the man who covered in sores was beside his door every
day, Lazarus. The previous week's
reading ends with "No servant can
serve two masters....You cannot serve both God and mammon." The rich man did not
see the other, did not see God's presence in Lazarus. How often do we walk by those who are minoritas? Do we remember to reach out to the poor and those on the
margins. Do we know them by name,
or rather as individuals, as Francis knew those he served? Do we embrace the
other, the immigrant , the creation all around us, or do we ignore it, as the
rich man ignored Lazarus? Let us
try to find those around us, who have become part of our background, as Lazarus
had become for the rich man and reach out to them.

Wonderful Witnesses: Praying with the Franciscan Fellowship
These next few weeks are filled with members of the Franciscan family, who provide a foundation for us, as witnesses of Gospel living. What a richness we have, as a family, with all of these holy men and women. How blessed we are to be able to share their stories and hold them close.
September 14:Our Lady of the Sorrows Today we commemorate the 7 sorrows in Mary's life: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of Jesus in the temple, Jesus and Mary's meeting along the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, Jesus' removal from the cross, and Jesus' burial. May we remember in a special way, all of the mothers in our lives, that they may be abundantly comforted in the sorrows that they encounter.

Development, Security and Economic Justice:
What's Gender Got to Do With It?

"Give her a share in the fruit of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the city gates."
- Proverbs 31 (NRSV)
Gender's got a lot to do with it!
As Proverbs recognized long ago, women's contributions are integral to enriching social, religious, and family life. However -- in homes and communities, out in fields and marketplaces, along borders and in areas of conflict -- violence, poverty, and other social evils keep women from attaining their full potential.
As women and men of faith, we can be a formidable force for change! Come to Ecumenical Advocacy Days, March 25-28, 2011. During these days filled with worship and dialogue, we will be inspired and equipped to speak boldly on behalf of all God's daughters.
Together we'll advocate on Capitol Hill for women's physical and emotional safety, their economic security and freedom, and promote people-centered ecologically-sustainable development, economic justice and peace for the flourishing of all our communities.

Protecting Biodiversity
During the U.N. International Year of Biodiversity, real estate development threatens the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry's seed bank at the Pavlovsk Agricultual Station in Russia, where 90 percent of the plants no longer grow elsewhere.
In addition to recognizing that biodiversity sustains life, Francsicans appreciate each member of Creation as a unique sign of God the Creator.
You can sign a petition to Russian President Medvedev, who is reviewing the case, at Food Democracy Now.
Please pray for Russia's recovery from wildfires and for the preservation of biodiversity. |
