St. F.R.A.N.C.I.S. Commitment to Civility in Discourse Our summer intern, Maria Balata, graciously helped create the materials for the St. F.R.A.N.C.I.S. Commitment to Civility in Discourse. We held a web conference featuring Fr. Clete Kiley and Fr. Al Mertz. There are also additional resources available on our website. Consider making the St. F.R.A.N.C.I.S. Commitment and letting your legislator know.

FAN members care for creation in DRC On
June 24, the celebration of the birth of St. John the Baptist, FAN
members in key States honored his witness as a voice crying out in the
wilderness by urging their Senators to include the Congo conflict minerals amendment in the final Financial Reform bill. Franciscans
are called to reverence the dignity of the human person and to approach
natural resources with gratitude rather than greed. In the DRC, illegal
exploitation of creation contributes to the violent abuse and even
destruction of human life. The bill passed and was signed into legislation by the President in July. To read more, click here. |

Poverty & Human Rights
SAVE THE DATE! Join FAN at Ecumenical Advocacy Days in Washington, DC
March 25-28, 2011
Development, Security and Economic Justice:
What's Gender Got to Do With It?

"Give her a share in the fruit of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the city gates."
- Proverbs 31 (NRSV)
Gender's got a lot to do with it!
As Proverbs recognized long ago, women's contributions are integral to enriching social, religious, and family life. However -- in homes and communities, out in fields and marketplaces, along borders and in areas of conflict -- violence, poverty, and other social evils keep women from attaining their full potential.
As women and men of faith, we can be a formidable force for change! Come to Ecumenical Advocacy Days, March 25-28, 2011. During these days filled with worship and dialogue, we will be inspired and equipped to speak boldly on behalf of all God's daughters.
Together we'll advocate on Capitol Hill for women's physical and emotional safety, their economic security and freedom, and promote people-centered ecologically-sustainable development, economic justice and peace for the flourishing of all our communities.
