Care for Creation
Coalition Building on Climate Change Policy
Franciscan Action Network is working in coalition with several other organizations, including the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change and the National Council of Churches in Christ, to work on improving climate legislation in the U.S. Senate.
FAN is dialoging with the offices of 11 Senators to set up meetings of thanks for their progressive steps towards ecological protection; the meetings also will push for more money for international adaptation. The FAN Action Center Staff has identified Team Captains in those 11 States and has initiated a letter campaign to enable the representative group to bring additional letters of support from constituents to the Senator and staff. We presently are reaching out to the following key Senators:
Sen. McCain of Arizona
Sen. Boxer of California
Sen. Liebermann of Connecticut Sen. Lugar of Indiana
Sen. Cardin of Maryland Sen. Kerry of Massachusetts Sen. Kolbuchar of Minnesota Sen. Lautenberg of New Jersey
Sen. Udall of New Mexico Sen. Gillibrand of New York
Sen. Merkley of Oregon Sen. Specter of PennsylvaniaIf you are interested in participating in the visits or the letter writing and are a resident of one of the above states, please contact Grant Clifton at clifton@franciscanaction.org or 202-527-7565.

Poverty & Human Rights: Economic Recession
"I Still Desire to Work"
FAN Research Analyst Pens White Paper on Franciscans and Underemployment in America
In an effort to continue to respond to the ongoing worldwide economic crisis, FAN has called upon our research analyst, Rev. David Couturier, OFM Cap. to reflect on the realities of unemployment and underemployment from a Franciscan perspective. As Fr. David notes in this white paper:
"Research into the life of St. Francis of Assisi indicates that he struggled mightily with the issues of work throughout his life. Work needs to be on the minds of Franciscans again. The plight of workers in America is worsening by the day and the consequences for peace both here and abroad are as enormous as they are worrisome. This paper will outline the challenges to employment in this time of the Great Recession and offer some Franciscan principles to guide our thinking and practice, as we work together for a job reform that truly promotes justice."

Member Highlight
Most Active FAN Member of 2009
The FAN Action Center Staff wishes to acknowledges with gratitude the most important part of our network - our members. It is each of you, taking the time to respond to actions, events, and information that allows FAN to be an effective force for social transformation. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the contributions of a person who, in the judgment of the FAN Action Center Staff, has demonstrated most visibly the commitment of our thousands of members.
FAN's most active member of 2009 has been involved in over 19 legislative actions in 2009, including issues like health care, Middle East peace, immigration, ecology and many other poverty issues. This year he has traveled extensively, attending many events, including the Chicago Immigration Conference. He is known throughout the Franciscan world and is a hero to the FAN Action Center staff for always being willing to do whatever task, and exert whatever energy, is needed of him to promote and live the gospel.
