Greetings!

Peace and all Good!

As promised in our previous message, we are excited at being able to welcome you to the first edition of FAN News! It is appropriate that we begin this new interaction on the eve of the Feast of Our Brother Francis.

We have partnered with Constant Contact to begin the process of regularly staying in touch with all of our registered members. We thank you for your patience. As you know, except for last week's action alert, we have not had the chance to communicate with our full member list until now. More time was required to complete essential "behind-the-scenes" technological improvements than we initially thought. However, after encouragement from our Action Commission at its gathering in early September, we now look forward to being in regular contact with all of you on at least a monthly basis. We look forward to continuing to develop a number of new programming and advocacy initiatives for this fall and for the "legislative storm" that portends for 2009, with the inauguration of a new President and Congress here in Washington.

It is our desire that these efforts will strongly express our unique Franciscan voice for spiritual and social transformation. We sincerely hope that you will take a moment to review this progress and discern how you might be involved in this important work.

Action Alerts Demonstrate FAN's Advocacy Potential

U.S. Capitol

Two "action alerts" undertaken by the Franciscan Action Network during its inaugural days, mark the beginnings of a comprehensive approach to legislative advocacy. These guideposts offer us relevant assessments of our first efforts at shaping public policy.

FAN's online legislative advocacy efforts (powered by Capital Advantage) made their debut in July. FAN, responding to a request from our Franciscan brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe, and partnering with Franciscans International (FI), successfully mobilized 153 persons in an online letter writing campaign to Secretary of State Rice.

The Economic Crisis:
Do Franciscans Have Anything to Say?
by Russ Testa
Executive Director

Over the past several weeks, with the financial crisis hitting Wall Street, the news has been filled with stories of economic challenge and hardship.  As Franciscans, we often are the first to provide assistance to persons in need. However, we also need to take time, especially during crisis periods, to step back, to pray, and to reflect on what we, as Franciscans and Franciscan-hearted people, can bring to the conversation of public policy.

In light of this need, FAN will be mobilizing for a two-week reflection and action "mini-campaign," exploring how we might further economic justice.

The process, slated to begin on Oct. 14, 2008, will be web-based and will include:

Care for Creation page at FAN

Production delays more deserving of a Hollywood script than of a 5 session program on care for creation have tested our membership's patience. Thank you for your understanding.

FAN is happy to announce that the first module of C4C, for facilitator, is now available on the website.

This preview reveals the innovative format and style of the 5-week program. Go ahead and scroll through the content to get a feel for what's coming.

We hope that curiosity and a desire to participate in the transformative experience will be the result of this preview.

The second, third, fourth, and fifth modules will be added in the coming weeks. Registration is necessary in order for groups to be sent the C4C kit accompanying the modules. Among other things, the kits contain seeds and planters for each participant. Please click here to download the registration form. You may also review the requirements for the program here.

FAN Participates with People of Faith to Pray and Advocate for Immigration Reform
by Larry Janezic, OFM
Issue Advocate

Rev. Larry Janezic, OFM participates in the Interfaith Immigration Summit Prayer Service in Columbus, OH

On September 10 and 11, a group of approximately 100 people representing 24 organizations from a variety of faith traditions and faith-based organizations gathered in Columbus, Ohio. Their purpose? To strengthen their understanding of the new realities of immigration in the United States through the common bond of experience. Participants of "The Midwest Interfaith Immigration Summit" discussed the inadequacies of current United States policy, and committed themselves to promoting more humane, compassionate, and just policies.

Root causes of immigration, oppressive experiences of state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies, and the need for federal legislation for comprehensive and humane immigration reform dominated the discussion forums.

Two highlights of the summit were stimulating experiences of prayer and action.

The main area of growth for FAN over the past months has been "virtual," with improvements to the interface of our website, database and online advocacy tools. These developments enable us to utilize the internet's outreach potential to animate all of the registered members of FAN. In this way we can continue to grow interest and enthusiasm for FAN, and for a unique Franciscan voice in legislative advocacy, while growing the base of members so essential for effectiveness in shaping public policy.

In addition, we have updated our registration process so that we can receive key information from our members to facilitate their taking action through our website, and to allow them to receive user-specific information from the Action Center. Further improvements will continue over the fall of 2008, but now we are ready to move in earnest.

However, there are some things that you, as a registered member of FAN can do to assist us as the Action Center.

1. Tell a Friend about FAN!

The number of persons registered through our website has passed the 700 mark!  This is remarkable growth, given that our efforts at direct advertisement have barely begun.  You have been spreading the word about FAN to your communities, families, and friends, and it is paying off! Great work to all of our members and supporters!  You can continue to spread the word by visiting FAN's Tell-A-Friend page and entering the names and email addresses of up to ten people and personalizing a prepared message for them about FAN.

2. Confirm and Update Your Membership Info.

Most of you who have signed up on our website have done so in the blue rectangle located at the top right corner of each page.  When you signed up there, you were asked to provide your full name, email address and zip code.  Signing up this way provided us with key contact information for members, but it was only the first part of the registration process.

After signing up, all of you received an automatically generated follow-up email, inviting you to follow a link to our full membership form to complete your registration.  Those who did so were able to fill in additional critical contact information (full voting address, mailing address, phone number), and to setup a username and password to navigate the "member-only" parts of our site.  If you have not taken this second step, your membership on the FAN website has not been fully activated!

It is very important that you complete your registration and provide us with the rest of your contact information. This will allow us to have a full accounting of the congressional districts in which our members are located.  This information is crucial for our online advocacy efforts and will allow you to take action without having to re-enter your information each time you do so.

Thus, I ask each registered member of FAN (and if you are receiving this message directly from FAN you are a registered member) to take these steps to ensure your membership is active:

1.  If you have a username and password for FAN, please click here and test your login credentials.  If you are successful in logging in, you will see the blue rectangle in the upper right of the page disappear and be replaced by a line that says "Welcome" with your first name listed.  If you know you have a username and password but do not remember them, follow the appropriate links on the login page and this information will be provided by automated email to the email address you provided when you signed up on the FAN website.

2.  If you do not have a username and password, this means you have not completed the second step in the registration process.  Many people did not complete the process because the automated email that was sent was captured by a junk email or spam filter.  Please consult with your email software or internet service provider to find out how to check your junk or spam email folder for an email message sent from noreply@franciscanaction.org.  This message will contain the link you must follow to complete your registration.

3.  If you cannot find the registration email in your junk or spam folder, please fill out our web form and submit it with a request to have me resend the registration link to your email address. Please be sure to use the same email that you initially provided to FAN.

4. When logged in, click on the "update profile" link on the upper right side of each page to review your contact information for accuracy.  If you make any changes, please click the "submit" button on the bottom of the page to record these changes.

5. IMPORTANT:  Take a moment to learn how to add  our domain (franciscanaction.org) to your safe senders or safe email lists.  This will help to ensure that you immediately receive future messages from us and that they do not end up in your junk or spam folders.  You will need to consult with your email software or your internet service provider on how to do this, as each one is a little different.

Please be sure to check your registration status as soon as possible!  Of our 700+ members, over 200 are presently listed as having incomplete registrations!  We need you to "finish the good work you have begun" so that the Action Center can be of better service to you.  Thank you.

, NOW is the time for FAN!

As we celebrate this Feast of St. Francis and commemorate the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan movement this coming year, we are at an exciting moment for FAN and the larger Franciscan family. Thank you for all you have done to bring us this far on the journey.

What is your role in FAN?  As an individual member you are the foundation to any success in bringing the social transformation that all of us can share.  From the beginning, the goal of FAN has been to help all Franciscans and Friends of Francis to be able to connect with others and act in more effective ways.  This network belongs to each one of us and we each have gifts and energy to share.

You can help make your FAN stronger by inviting others to join the network.  You may host a training and formation process in your area on Care for Creation or Peacemaking.  Perhaps you wish to share some best practices on the discussion groups area of the FAN website. Of course, we always need your prayers for the success of our common efforts to link our Franciscan spirit and desire for change.

As the elections approach, FAN must build an organized base of people in our ministries so that our common voice for change on behalf of persons who are poor and marginalized, and for all of creation, can be heard.

As a first step, please forward this message to at least five others so that they can participate in "transforming the world in the spirit of St. Francis and St. Clare."

(NOTE: You may forward this message via the link directly below or at the top of this message. Please do NOT use your email program's forwarding feature to forward this message.)

Forward to a Friend

God give you Peace!

Sincerely,
