| Free Trained Doulas (Really!)
If you or a friend are in need of a low-cost or free doula for your birth or postpartum, please feel free to email me. I can provide you with referrals to women who have completed my Doula Training Workshops (and the associated prerequisites) and are now in process of attending their 3-5 volunteer births. Please send me your name, town, preferred contact info, and a short paragraph about what your hopes are for your birth or postpartum. |
from above
...reach out to a friend or a small group of friends- preferably other
parents who understand the wild and lovely juggling act that is family.
Invite them to share their visions and goals with you, and commit to
checking in with one another every week by phone or email. This is your hand-picked support group, and your promise to each other is that you'll cheer and lovingly prod each other towards that realistic goal.
This year, I invite you to join me in making a Gentle & Supported
New Year's Resolution. Here's the cliff notes recap: 1) Set a realistic goal.
It need not be glamorous- in fact it may be quite modest but will help
give you the foundation for other good accomplishments. Some
suggestions: - I will be in bed and relaxing by 10:30PM at
least 4 nights a week. (I can get up a little earlier to do whatever I
might have done for another hour at night- and I'll probably do it more
efficiently.)
- I will eat a piece of fruit every morning before eating anything
else. (This can do wonders for your digestion, and is a great example
for your kids.) -I will clean out & reorganize one closet or room per month. (Imagine, by the end of the year....!) -I will make more time for friendships that nourish me and bring me joy. (Be specific about the 'how' of this one.) 2) Write it down. 3) Choose your support group and start cheering each other on!
The New Year can be a great time to make some changes in our lives,
especially if they're realistic, compassionate, and essentially about
nourishing ourselves as whole people. Wishing you all the very best for 2009! -Michelle

The Gentle, Supported New Year's Resolution
Looking back over past New Years, I have vague memories of making several resolutions over the years. Embarrassingly, I only clearly remember one (and I'm still working on it). I don't have statistics on this, but I suspect I'm in good company. It's easy to get swept up in the optimistic-fresh-start mentality at the beginning of the year, setting goals that for one reason or another are never met. Many parents get frustrated that they don't seem to be able to accomplish as much in 'the outside world' as they did before they had kids. Surely things should get back to normal after the baby is sleeping through the night...or potty trained.... or in preschool....right? What we find is that the 'old normal' never returns. Our daily lives, bodies, minds, and priorities in life are forever altered when we make space for a little one in the family. Making peace with this truth can pave the way towards realistic, compassionate goal-setting. Another common pitfall is not being clear about what our goals are. It is essential to write it down- however & wherever you choose to do that- distill your vision into definite words and commit it to paper. And finally... (click to read on) |
