Storm Response Appreciation and Recognition
| 2011 Blizzard Responce |
At its February meeting, the Lake County Board publicly thanked everyone that worked throughout the blizzard, including Lake County employees, emergency responders, residents, and volunteers. During the storm, many dedicated public servants braved the treacherous conditions, sometimes putting their own lives at risk, to help residents.
During the Special Recognition, Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman thanked various departments for their contributions and shared stories from employees about the storm. Read News Release.

State Approves Allocation of Lake Michigan Water
Ten communities in northern and western Lake County have received approval from the State to obtain Lake Michigan water. The allocation approval is the first step in a complex process to transition from ground water to Lake Michigan water in order to meet long-term water demands for this growing area.
In this video, County Board Member Bonnie Thomson Carter (District 5) explains why this project is important. |
Reminder from the Chief County Assessment Office
Senior Homestead Exemption:
Residents who receive the Senior Homestead Exemption DO NOT need to reapply each year. This has been in the news lately because of changes in Cook County, but in Lake County there is no requirement to reapply each year.
Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze:
Residents must reapply each year for the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze. In the coming weeks, the Chief County Assessment Office will mail this application to all taxpayers receiving the Senior Homestead Exemption. |
SWALCO Asks Lake County Residents to help Recycle and Reuse their Shoes!
Every year, millions of athletic shoes end up in landfills. SWALCO has an ongoing program to recycle worn out athletic shoes and turn them into amaterial that is used to create sports surfaces like basketball courts, tennis courts, running tracks, and playgrounds. Last year, more than 33,000 shoes were recycled and approximately 3,000 gently worn pairs of shoes were donated to a local shoe charity. To learn more about the program, or to sign up to be a collection site, please contact Merleanne Rampale at MRampale@swalco.org.

If you have used athletic shoes to donate, visit the SWALCO website for locations.

Strategic Plan Progress Report The County Board adopts a Strategic Plan that is used to help guide the future of the county. In 2008, the Board engaged the public in this process for the first time, holding six community forums across the county. The Board listened and used the input from the forums to help develop its plan. Lake County has made significant progress on the five key strategic goals identified in the plan. The highlights of our progress are included in the 2011 Strategic Plan: Progress Report, or read more about the progress made, by clicking on each goal: Reduce Congestion and Improve Transportation Systems in Lake County Enhance Livability and Economic Opportunity Promote a Sustainable Environment Build Healthy and Resilient Communities Provide Public Safety |
