 Weather Update

We've had a few questions about the expected winter weather tonight and tomorrow, so wanted to share a brief synopsis.

The National Weather Service has issued a "winter weather advisory" from midnight tonight into Saturday night. An advisory is issued when a significant weather event is forecast that is NOT expected to meet other watch or warning criteria. This advisory is for accumulating snow of three to six inches across the county.

The most recent forecast discussion indicates that snow is expected to move into our area after midnight from west to east, with the heaviest snow occurring in the early morning hours of Saturday. Snow is forecast to taper off through the day Saturday, before ending by Saturday night. Sunday is expected to be cold and blustery, though no additional snow is expected for the next several days.

Accumulations from two to four inches are probable throughout the county, and some areas could see up to five or even six inches.

Since this is the first significant snowfall of the year, we encourage people to use caution when shoveling to avoid overexertion, and to pay attention for slippery spots when driving or walking.

Ice Skating and Sledding Information

The Willow Stream Park winter sports area will be open until March 1, depending on snow and freeze conditions.

The unsupervised sled hill is located at the north end of the park. The most convenient place to park is at the north entrance (Farrington Drive) near the pool. The sledding hill is lighted at the top.

The park also has a large ice skating area. The rink is located on the south side of the park off of Old Checker Road. The sled hill and rinks are lighted until 10:30 pm.

Other non-lighted skating areas are located at Mill Creek Park and Twin Creeks Park.

By using the sledding hill and skating areas, you assume responsibility for injury and for determining that all conditions are safe.

Parents are responsible for the supervision of their own children. Supervision is not provided by the Park District. Please be careful and considerate of others.

Sledding and ice skating are hazardous recreational activities and can involve substantial personal risk. Ice skating is permitted in designated areas only. No one is permitted on any lake or pond.

SWALCO Announces 2010 Holiday Green Guide and Holiday Light Recycling Program

Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, Americans throw away an

estimated 5 million+ tons of extra garbage. An important part of

SWALCO's mission is to help educate the community about the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle an buy recycled) and to share information and ideas that will help support them. With that mission in mind, SWALCO's Public Information Officer, Merleanne Rampale, has written a Green Holiday Guide and put together some fun and interesting suggestions for turning your holidays a little greener this year, including a few of her favorite green gift picks this year and favorite green cleaning recipes. You'll find loads of ideas to help you celebrate in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion, unique green gift suggestions, eco-friendly decorating and entertaining ideas, as well as helpful information and resources.

The guide also notes a number of SWALCO programs and services, including their Electronics Recycling Collections held at various locations around the county.

This year, through January 31, 2011, the Agency will also collect and recycle unwanted or broken Holiday Lights (incandescents & LEDs) and extension cords, free of charge at any of their electronics Recycling Collections and other sites as listed on the website.

Please visit their website at www.swalco.org to find this Guide and other publications, collection event dates and locations, more about their programs and services, and other related information.
