EUROPEAN STYLE PHEASANT HUNT
Since Harpole's Heartland Lodge opened for upland hunting in 1995, the number of upland hunts has increased greatly. In the 1999 upland season, we introduced European Style Driven Pheasant Shoots. These special days of uniquely presented birds offer shooters an experience found only in Europe until they were introduced in the United States. James P. Sterba, Staff Reporter of the Wall Street Journal experienced one of our shoots and wrote: "11 shooters were positioned beside hay bales 30 yards apart on the lower slopes of an oak-dotted hillside and the whistle blows. Within seconds a pheasant breaks high over the trees on the left. Three guns open up, missing and the bird glides unharmed into the brush behind. Soon guns are booming all along the line as more ringed-necks sail overhead. Some are hit and thump to earth. Most aren't and don't." You'll find the experience exhilarating - the roosters' raucous cackles mixed with gun blasts and shouting gunners. This is a wonderful spectacle and a challenging shoot, even for the best gunners.
