President's Message

The changing of the board is taking place and I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Mona Burrows for her diligence in guiding GCDA for the past two years.  Anyone that has volunteered to sit on a neighborhood board knows that it is sometimes a thankless job which receives no pay. Mona Burrows was tireless, going above and beyond to help bring change and maintain GCDA as the representative for the independent owners and operators of Grand Central District.

The Grand Central District Association and its members are a unified voice for the independent business people creating an environment that is an attraction for the City of St. Petersburg. Grand Central celebrates its diversity as an eclectic urban village not only in the shops, services and restaurants, but in the people who run them, by creating a one of a kind area that has flourished
during these tough times.

My calling as the President of GCDA this year is to re-energize the people who contributed their time and money, but are not presently active in the district.  It is time to bring in the old with the new and help make GCDA stronger.  I am asking everyone to take some time and join GCDA - we are all in this together.  If your business or residence is on Central and 1st Ave. N & S, between 16th Street and 31st Street, you need to join GCDA.  The nominal membership fee is the best bang for your buck when you consider other memberships that cost more money and get less return.

Join today and look for monthly meet and greets at different GCDA's businesses.  The first one is taking place on January 5th, starting at 5pm, at one of our new members, Cappy's Pizza on 1st Ave N.  We will have opportunities to have fun and sneak a little information to you.  I am looking forward to meeting all of you...again.

Sincerely,
Jim Longstreth, President
Grand Central District Association

Walking Tour: Westward Ho from the Waterfront
Saturday, December 26th at 10:00am-Noon
$5

The tour will begin at 10am in front of the Historic Detroit Hotel.  Get a brief history about St. Petersburg as you travel through the country's largest public waterfront park system.  See and learn about the Pier, the Vinoy Park Hotel, baseball in St Petersburg, and the Flori de Leon Apartments where Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig lived during spring training.
The tour group will hop aboard the new Central Avenue Shuttle, and ride to the Craftsman House Gallery -our wonderfully restored original model home for the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood.  Tour continues into Historic Kenwood, one of the country's premiere bungalow neighborhoods.  Typically one of the bungalows is open to view. The tour will return to the Craftsman House, where you can eat lunch or board the shuttle to return downtown.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our concerts in November.  The Wiyos squeezed onto our small stage and delighted the packed house.  Later in the month Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart put on another great show.  Here's whose up next.

Tracy Grammer in Concert
Friday, December 11th at 8:00pm
$15 in advance/$20 week prior
www.tracygrammer.com

Only 6 tickets left for this show.
Beautiful vocals accompanied by her guitar & violin. Her 2005 CD "Flowers of Avalon" was the #1 most played album on folk radio across the US that year.
"Her voice is distinctive, as is her mastery over the instruments she plays" --- Joan Baez
"One of the finest pure musicians anywhere in folkdom" --- The Boston Globe
"Tracy Grammer has that elusive quality of being able to speak directly to another person's heart" --- Richard Shindell

Cliff Eberhardt in Concert
Friday, January 8th at 8:00pm
$15 in advance/$20 week prior
www.cliffeberhardt.net

Cliff returns with his new cd, "500 Miles" (5 out of 5 stars).  One of the top performers on the solo acoustic circuit, he combines well crafted songs with rich, emotional vocals.  His between song stories will keep you laughing all night.  USA Today calls his sound a "soulful steam" and named his last cd the #5 album of the year.

Ryan Montbleau Band in Concert
Sunday, January 10th at 5:00pm
$15 in advance/$20 week prior
www.ryanmontbleauband.com

This is the show I am most excited about!  The band comes straight off the waters of Jam Cruise to perform here.  They were the band voted onto the cruise by the fans.  Their improvisational jams draw comparisons to Dave Matthews and Bela Fleck, with the voice of Jack Johnson. Check out their music online or maybe catch them on WMNF's jam band show, In The Groove, on Tuesday nights from 9pm-11pm.  You'll be hooked.
This band is creating a buzz on the national scene.  It's probably the last time they will play a local venue as small as ours, so we expect the show to sell out quickly.

Edie Cary in Concert
Friday, February 19th at 7:30pm
$15 in advance/$20 week prior
www.ediecary.com

Boston's Edie Carey combines a graceful, soaring voice with powerful songwriting.  This show will be her warm up for an appearance with Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt and Steve Earle on the Cayamo Cruise.  The press has called her "the Shawn Colvin of her generation."

Two unadvertised concerts:
These will only be advertised to you, our newsletter readers.  No radio, no print ads.
Sunday, February 14th - John Gorka  (only 8 tickets left)
