A 'Jersey' state of mind: 25 points of interest you need to see

 Peter Genovese Mark Voger/The Star-Ledger

You won't find these "postcards" in any store, but Peter Genovese urges you to visit these quintessentially New Jersey locations.
New Jersey is the most mocked, misunderstood, maligned state. A perpetual object of ridicule, the punch line to countless jokes, New Jersey will never be fully understood or appreciated. Outsiders don't get us, maybe will never get us. I'm not sure we get ourselves most of the time; there is so much we don't know -- or care to know -- about the state we live in.

For me, the places below reveal the real Jersey -- sometimes glorious, sometimes gritty, always entertaining. If out-of-staters wanted a crash course in Jersey, I'd take them to these places first. They can visit Lucy the Elephant on their own.

1. High Point State Park
2. The Pulaski Skyway
3. Camping in the Pine Barrens
4. The Atlantic City Museum, Garden Pier, Atlantic City
5. Port Newark/Elizabeth
6. The Somerville Traffic Circle
7. Seabreeze, Fortescue, Bivalve
8. New Egypt Speedway, Route 539, New Egypt
9. General stores
10. Columbus Farmer's Market, Route 206, Columbus
11. Bayway, Linden
12. The White Horse Pike
13. The Great Falls, Paterson
14. Red Bank Battlefield Park, National Park

15. Small Town Heaven
Contenders for New Jersey's coolest small town include Cape May, Collingswood, Allentown, Spring Lake and others. Make mine Cranbury, with its wide, tree-shaded Main Street. Tranquil, unhurried, and unstuffy, Cranbury makes for a great day trip. Must-stops: the Cranbury Bookworm and the Blue Rooster Bakery & Cafe.

16. The Green Sergeants bridge, Sergeantsville
17. Finns Point National Cemetery/Fort Mott State Park, Pennsville
18. St. Vladimir Memorial Church, Jackson
19. Rutgers grease trucks, New Brunswick
20. Scottish Rite Auditorium, Collingswood
21. The Ironbound
22. Cowtown Rodeo, Pilesgrove
23. Climb a lighthouse.
24. Charlie's Pool Room, Alpha
25. The swamps of North Jersey
