Welcome Friends,

Here at the Blue Rooster Bakery & Cafe, February is all about hearts -- of all kinds.

In planning our menus for the Blue Rooster, we have always tried to be conscious about our choices. From selecting local ingredients whenever possible to insuring that our food is fresh and nutritious, as restaraunteurs we believe that the choices we make have very real impacts on our customers, our suppliers and our community.

So, as Americans mark February as American Heart Month, we are as pleased as ever to think of our menu as food with a conscience. While we offer special indulgences, too, we are proud to serve heart-healthy choices such as three hot grain cereals, a banana smoothie and tabbouleh fruit salad for breakfast.  Our hearty lunches, such as the house favorite black bean soup or our daily grain salad, are as healthy as they are delicious.

But February is also the month to celebrate the loves in our lives -- and we all can enjoy a sweet now and again. We are offering some special treats this Valentine's Day season that are sure to bring joy to your heart.

We hope you find time this month to treat yourself -- and your heart -- to some of the wonders of fresh, nutritious and delicious food served at the Blue Rooster.

Master Gardener Joins the Blue Rooster

Always committed to serving the freshest, local ingredients, the Blue Rooster is planning a spring-summer project that will bring that commitment home to roost!

Working with local master gardener Alice Dabrowska to help design and construct a garden, we will be planting a wide array of herbs, fruits and vegetables - peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, beans, just to name a few - behind our kitchen. The kitchen staff is excited at the prospect of sneaking out back for a pinch of this or a handful of that. And, in the spirit of working with our community, we have found another group of individuals who are equally excited about our garden project.

The young ladies of Junior Girl Scout Troop 71566 will be working with us  to earn a badge in agriculture by learning how to plant and maintain a proper kitchen garden. This extraordinary group of girls, who have demonstrated a keen interest in nature and the environment, will be getting their hands dirty alongside us as we watch these seedlings grow into usable ingredients for our tables.

For the rest of our community, we are hoping you will "follow along" with us by planting something yummy in your yard or window sill. We will make it easy on you in the months to come, by passing on helpful hints for you to keep up with us.

BLUE ROOSTER TABBOULEH FRUIT SALAD

Everyone who ventures to try our fruit tabbouleh comments on the fresh, light flavors and the pleasure of finding a fruit and grain mixture that is just a bit different! Traditional as a breakfast in Northern Africa and the Middle East, this is equally good as a light dessert.

1 lb + 2 oz medium bulgar wheat
1 scant cup apple or orange juice
1 handful chopped dates
2 apples - unpeeled & chopped
2 pears - peeled & chopped
1 large handful dried apricots or figs
Pinch of ground cinnamon
Optional: handful of chopped fresh mint, honey, or lemon juice to taste

Combine sugar and juice. Mix remaining ingredients, and pour juice mixture over top. Stir gently and serve cold or at room temperature. Serves 6
