ArresterWorks joined the Arrester Industry in January 2008 as an independent consulting firm focused on increasing the reliability of power systems through the application of arresters.

The Lead Length Issue

If you have ever asked any of the questions above, you are not alone.  It is one of the most mis-understood issues in the application of arresters. 

 

Line inductance is our enemy in this application.  The lead inductance is the significant variable.  If there was no inductance in the lead, there would be no issue. 

 

The line inductance generates significant voltage levels during a fast rising surge.  The value of the voltage drop is seen in the plot below.   A 31kA surge through a 10kV arrester with 2.5 feet of lead results in a 50% increase in voltage across the protected equipment.
