PRESERVATION VICTORY AT

FRICK'S LOCK!

Frick's Lock.Kimmerly

Frick's Lock, East Coventry Township, Chester County

After almost three years of monthly meetings between Exelon Nuclear, Preservation Pennsylvania, and East Coventry Township, an agreement to save the village of Frick's Lock was signed last month--a victory for preservationists who have persistently advocated for the 250 year-old settlement.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, then on Preservation Pennsylvania's Pennsylvania At Risk list in 2009, Frick's Lock was abandoned in the early 1980s when the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant was constructed across the river.  In the wake of this transition from a thriving community to a ghost town, Frick's Lock's most important buildings, which date back to the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, deteriorated due to vandalism and neglect.

The new agreement, however, will protect and preserve this historic site.

In addition to establishing a protective fence around the grounds, Exelon has agreed to spend $2.5 million to restore the exterior of several buildings as stabilized ruins.  The corporation is donating four houses to the township, worth an estimated $1 million, and has agreed to perform routine maintenance on the village to stave off further deterioration.  According to an Exelon spokesperson, most of the work is expected to occur in 2012.  There are even tentative plans to open Frick's Lock for public tours by 2013.

Major Progress on the

East Stroudsburg Railroad Station

 East Stroudsburg RR Station.2011

Improvements at the East Stroudsburg Railroad Station.

In December 2010, Preservation Pennsylvania included the East Stroudsburg Railroad Station on the Pennsylvania At Risk list.

At that time, the historic building had been saved from demolition (through an amazing community-based effort) and moved across the railroad tracks. It was sitting on temporary cribbing awaiting a new, permanent home.

We are pleased to report that now--a mere three months later--the building stands on a permanent foundation near the railroad tracks and former switching tower.  It was rotated 180 degrees to maintain its trackside orientation and is being rehabilitated.  The building's new owner, the EastBurg Community Alliance (ECA) has worked diligently through the complicated process of obtaining the necessary permits to relocate the building. Due to its largely successful fundraising efforts, the ECA now has the funds in hand to rehabilitate the exterior of the building (less some of the attached canopies for now).  Future rehabilitation plans to the interior include a history room, a coffee kiosk in the central ticket office, offices for the ECA, a recognition hallway and a community meeting room.

Today, the fire-damaged portion of the building is being reconstructed, with significant historic materials such as the stained glass windows and metal canopy supports being salvaged for re-use in the project.  ECA's fundraising efforts for the interior rehabilitation, reconstruction of the canopies and other site improvements continue. For more information about this project or to make a donation to the project, please see the ECA's website.

This project saved the building from destruction, and while it is not a restoration of the train station, this rehabilitation of the building on a new site in the heart of town is a wonderful example of a community preservation effort that will keep this important building in use as an asset in the community.
