PRESERVATION PENNSYLVANIA INTRODUCES

The New Project for Pennsylvania

Transportation & Heritage (ProjectPATH)

Preservation Pennsylvania in partnership with

PennDOT announce the launch of the new Project for ProjectPath Keystone LogoPennsylvania Transportation & Heritage (ProjectPATH). This new program, formerly known as the Transportation Public Involvement Clearinghouse, will provide you with almost immediate access to Section 106 documents for active PennDOT projects programmed on the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

In addition to the searchable database of PennDOT projects, Preservation Pennsylvania launched a new website that serves as a clearinghouse of information and documents relating to Section 106 and transportation decision-making in Pennsylvania.

Please visit the new website, www.paprojectpath.org, and click

Juniata College Workshop Participants.11.20.10

Attendees listen to the presentation at the "Preserving Pennsylvania:  A Workshop for Communities" event, held November 20, 2010.

 MANY THANKS...

...To everyone who participated in the Delaware and Lehigh Preservation Roundtable.  Over 60 preservation leaders and community volunteers gathered at Lehigh University on November 18th to discuss current issues in the field.

...To attendees of the "Preserving Pennsylvania" workshop held at Juniata College on November 20th.  Approximately 80 people spent the day learning about strategies to preserve and protect places that matter.

...To the host sites, local organizers and facilitators who were instrumental in making these events seamless and successful.  All of us at Preservation Pennsylvania are most grateful!

Both events resulted in multiple requests for Preservation Pennsylvania to host additional roundtables and workshops in 2011.  As a result, planning is underway for more educational outreach events throughout the new year.  Stay tuned for more details!

FIELD NOTES:

 Highlights From Our

Partners in the Field Representatives

Our Partners in the Field representatives travel to the four corners of the Commonwealth in order to consult with individuals, organizations and rural and urban communities about preserving the places that matter to them.  The collective expertise of field representatives is provided to the residents of Pennsylvania free of charge.  Below are summaries of two current projects:

Erin Hammerstedt is assisting a community development corporation, comprised of individuals, volunteers and interested parties, in rehabilitating two historic buildings.
Saltsburg Project.Hammerstedt.2010
Rehabilitation project, Borough of Saltsburg, Indiana County.

Located in the Borough of Saltsburg, Indiana County, work is already underway to convert one structure into a community library and computer center, possibly to include an art gallery and visitor's center.  Additionally, the group is hoping to acquire an adjacent mill building to expand this rehabilitation effort even further.

David Kimmerly is currently working with community

volunteers to prevent the demolition of the George Shober House in Warwick Township, Lancaster County.  The circa 1853 brick Classical Revival home may be razed to make way for a Mechanicsburg-based credit union.  Unfortunately, the township has no historic preservation ordinances in place, so David is working with Warwick officials and investigating the applicability of other statues.

WHERE IN THE WORLD...

Was Preservation Pennsylvania's Staff?

The staff of Preservation Pennsylvania was especially busy in the month of November, traversing Commonwealth and Country in the name of preservation and heritage!

Between November 18th and November 23rd:

Executive Director Mindy Crawford, accompanied by Board Chairman, A. Roy Smith, visited St. Louis, Missouri, for a mentoring visit with our sister organization, Missouri Preservation.

Program Director, Jennifer Horn, and Partners in the Field Representative, Erin Hammerstedt, helped to facilitate a free public event entitled, "Preserving Pennsylvania:  A Workshop for Communities," held on the campus of Juniata College, Huntingdon County.

Partners in the Field Representative, David Kimmerly, participated in the "Delaware and Lehigh Preservation Roundtable," presented on the campus of Lehigh University, Lehigh County.

Development Director, Jean Hershner, traveled to San Antonio, Texas, with other graduate students from Penn State Harrisburg to attend the national conference of the American Studies Association.

All intrepid travelers have safely returned home and look forward to more trips in 2011 that will bring visibility to Preservation Pennsylvania and advance the cause of historic preservation!
