FIELD NOTES

Partners in the Field:

Improving the Face of Main Street

Lock Haven Before.Erin.2010
Preservation Pennsylvania has hosted the "Partners in the Field" program for just over two years and is pleased with its measurable and visually dynamic results.  A recent example of the Partners' work is a façade improvement project in downtown Lock Haven, Clinton County.  The town's Main Street Manager requested Partners in the Field representative, Erin Hammerstedt, to assist the property owner with the technical aspects of the project.

Initially, this threLock Haven.Erin.2010e-story brick commercial building was covered in vertical wood siding. Erin worked with the property owner, providing information on the repair of historic wood windows, appropriate masonry repointing, the advantages and risks of removing paint from the brick versus repainting it, and how the prismatic glass transom could be repaired.  When this information was considered in light of the property owner's goals and financial constraints, the owner decided to rehabilitate her windows, repaint the brick façade, and retain a sign board over the historic transom.

Although the transom was not restored as part of the project, the appearance of the building now is MUCH more appropriate than it was at the outset of the project.  In the end, Lock Haven.Erin.2010the project has had a tremendous visual impact on the downtown.  This is a good example of how, when property owners, Main Street organizations and preservationists work together, great things can be accomplished.

A joint program with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Partners in the Field is a matching grant program designed to put additional professional preservationists in the communities where they are most needed.

To make a gift in support of this effort or any of Preservation Pennsylvania's important advocacy, education, or technical support initiatives, please contact Jean Hershner, Preservation Pennsylvania's Development Director at (717) 234-2310 ext. 17 or via email at jhershner@preservationpa.org.
