Conference Session Spotlight:
Advocating for Your Neighborhood Schools
Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Pennsylvania is losing its historic and neighborhood schools at an alarming rate.  Schools are the heart of a community.  Too often, these historic schools and options for renovation are routinely dismissed without full consideration of alternatives or community input. Many schools are either abandoned or demolished simply because of their age, as school administrators argue that they cannot be preserved and adapted to meet modern educational program needs. What is a community to do? Many residents feel powerless to intervene or participate in what is often a highly charged political process. It does not have to be this way.
Attend Advocating for Your Neighborhood Schools:  Preservation Strategies on Friday morning to hear how other communities have successfully saved their historic neighborhood schools.  Using the successfully rehabilitated Hazleton "Castle on the Hill" as a case study, this session will provide strategies for working with school boards and parents to retain and rehabilitate these important schools.
