State Re-evaluates Metal Truss Bridges for National Register Eligibility
In fall 2008, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office, initiated a statewide re-evaluation of metal truss bridges on the Pennsylvania Historic Bridge Survey to determine their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The re-evaluation updates and replaces the eligibility determinations put forth in the Pennsylvania Historic Bridge Survey conducted by A.G. Lichtenstein and Associates, Inc. (now TranSystem Corporation).
The minutes of the two re-evaluation sessions and a full list of bridges with new National Register determinations are available by request from Preservation Pennsylvania. Please contact Jennifer Horn, Preservation Pennsylvania at 717-234-2310 or visit Preservation Pennsylvania online for more information regarding the re-evaluation process. |
Coalition Urges Governor Rendell to Respect Environmental Precedent and Reinvest Revenues
In December 2008, Preservation Pennsylvania joined thirteen other conservation groups to protest a recent proposal that would allow the reallocation of revenues from Marcellus Shale gas leases on State Forest lands to supplement shortages in the General Fund. In addition, the coalition urged Governor Rendell to commit the revenues to reinvestments in green infrastructure projects to boost economic growth through job creation and mitigate the environmental impacts of drilling and extraction.

Field Representatives Around the State
Preservation Pennsylvania's shared field services representative Dave Kimmerly recently visited Pennhurst State School and Hospital in East Vincent Township, Chester County. Kimmerly met with Preserve Pennhurst members and toured the former institution. Abandoned since 1987, the facility has fallen into disrepair and is threatened with demolition. In 2008, Preservation Pennsylvania's listed the endangered historic site on the Pennsylvania At Risk.
