I am excited to present this month's newsletter topic, Servant Leadership. Too often in the world today leaders are seen as self-serving and egotistical. Leadership, at its heart, is truly an act of service to the people and world around us. Leadership provides us the opportunity to bring the best of ourselves to bear on some need in our family, community, organization or the world. When we do, we are more fulfilled and the world is a better place. It is a win-win for everyone.

What is a servant-leader you ask? Read on for more details but Larry Spears, CEO of the Greenleaf Center has identified 10 characteristics that he views as being critical to the development of servant-leaders. These include:
  • Listening
  • Empathy
  • Healing
  • Awareness
  • Persuasion
  • Conceptualization
  • Foresight
  • Stewardship
  • Commitment to Growth of People
  • Building Community

Final Thought

"We must be silent before we can listen. We must listen before we can learn. We must learn before we can prepare. We must prepare before we can serve. We must serve before we can lead." ~ by William Arthur Ward as quoted in Leadership . . . with a human touch. June 1,1999
