Christmas Spirit
Second-grade students from Walker Creek Elementary teamed up to help other children have warm feet this winter. Instead of exchanging books at their holiday party, they brought 420 new pairs of socks for Birdville Councils of PTAs' Clothes Connection.

| Watch DOGS
Dads of Walker Creek will enjoy pizza with their child/children on Tuesday evening, January 19th at 6:30. This is an organizational meeting for Watch DOGS which stands for "Dads of Great Students." We know there are many benefits from Dad's involvement in the lives of their children. We would like to see this group of Dads do great things for the kids of Walker Creek.

Stock Market Game Winners
Jared Burleson, Brooklyn Younkin, and Angela Whistler, Walker Creek Elementary fifth-graders, recently competed in "The Stock Market Game." The Stock Market Game is a 10-week Internet-based stock trading simulation that was developed by the Foundation for Investor Education. The game encourages students to learn about the American economic system and the stock market, while applying math, social studies, business, language arts and technology skills. Using the newspaper and the Internet, teams learn the basics of investing, researching companies and making decisions on how to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks on the NASDAQ and the New York and American stock exchanges. In this realistic simulation, trades are made online using the actual ticker symbols and real time pricing. Portfolios were updated daily and monitored throughout the session. Walker Creek's team finished third out of 143 teams in northeast Texas. Joseph Olinger, fifth-grade teacher, was the sponsor. He finished second for the instructor category.

Coyote Fun Run Rewards
It seems that since our Fun Run in mid-November we have had more cold weather than usual. This has made it difficult to schedule our Ice Cream Sundae Event where Ms. White makes an ice cream sundae with Mrs. Perry dropping the ingredients from the roof. We also need to schedule Michael McEwen's pizza party with his friends for bringing in the most money and Colton Eager's lunch on the roof for running the most laps. Students have received their individual prizes, and we are working on getting all the other Fun Run incentives scheduled. We are tentatively scheduling the Ice Cream Sunday Event for February 12th (weather permitting). |

Celebration of Kids
Our Celebration of Kids for the third six-weeks will be on Friday, January 29th. This is a time to recognize those with outstanding grades, and attendance. Kindergarten, first and second graders will have their assembly from 8:45 - 9:15. Immediately following, at 9:30 we will celebrate those students in third, fourth, and fifth grade. Circle of Courage nominees will also be inducted on that day. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend. |

Be a Fan
See our Walker Creek Website and click on FACEBOOK to become a fan of the Official Walker Creek Fan Page. We will post up-to-the-minute information about school closings for bad weather, early releases, holidays, etc. This is another way we are trying to keep you informed. |
Overflow Parking
The NRH Police Department has brought to our attention a safety issue with the area southwest of the school (by the crossing guard's station) that we use for overflow parking. They have asked that we not use that area for parking before school and at dismissal time. They are concerned about the safety of the students who use that sidewalk to walk toward the bridge. At this point in time it is still alright to use this area when we have large events during school hours or in the evening. Designated visitor parking will be extended further toward the ice rink in the front of the building. |
| Ways to Help Your School
Did you know that there are several ways that Walker Creek parents and students can help the environment and the school at the same time! AbitibiBowater is the recycling company that comes and collects all the newspapers and recyclable cardboard from the big green containers on our staff parking lot. Many families bring their newspapers and discarded mail to the school for recycling. Please do not include corrugated cardboard, but cardboard like a cereal box is appropriate.
Save Box Tops for Education
As you prepare packages for recycling, please notice if there is a BOX TOP FOR EDUCATION coupon. Cut that off and save it. When you have a zip-loc bag full, send them to school with your child. They can bring them to the office and this helps the school. We received over $1,000 last year through this simple project.
Recycle Ink Cartridge
Empty ink cartridges of all kinds can be recycled through local office supply outlets. This gives us store credit for much needed supplies that teachers and office personnel need on a daily notice. |
NCEA Just for the Kids Award
The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) recently recognized Walker Creek Elementary as part of its 2009 Just for the Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools in Texas. Ms. White and Ms. Perry will be receiving our award from a distinguished Texas Legislator later this month. For more information go to the website, http://www.nc4ea.org.
