Fun Run

November 13th is the BIG DAY!  It's our third annual Coyote Fun Run!  The school and the PTA are combining efforts to make this event a huge success so that no other major fund raising must be done this school year.  We have listened to parental pleas for less brochure sales and cookie dough fund raisers.  This is a healthy and fun way for our students along with their families to be able to support the school without purchasing over-priced products.  This way all donations go strictly to fund Walker Creek activities and materials.  Please support this great cause.  Without our school and PTA earning additional money, we would not be able to have the extras that make school fun and engaging for our scholars.

Schedule for the Day

3rd Grade   8:10-9:00
2nd  Grade   9:05-9:55
5th Grade    10:05-10:55
4th Grade    11:00-11:50
1st Grade    12:25-1:15
K               1:20-2:10

Last year, color printers for the classrooms and a major piece of playground equipment were purchased.  Die cuts for the Ellison system were added. Chairs to be used during large programs and letters for our marquee were bought. A book
binding machine to highlight student work and playground balls were other items added to our school. We were able to purchase the second printer that prints visitor and volunteer badges. The list goes on! These are all things that we could not have purchased without the proceeds from the Fun Run.

PTA Membership Drive Reaches Goals
Carol Brandt, this year's PTA Membership Chairman, has been busy since before school started preparing for this year's Membership Campaign.  To say it was a successful campaign is a bit of an understatement.  See the accomplishments below:

100% Faculty and Staff Participation for which we will receive the Golden Apple Award and Applebee's will donate lunch for our entire faculty and Staff
We also reached our goal of one member for every student in our school.  In fact, we have a little over 600 students and we have 647 adults who joined PTA.
Isabella Stallcup in Ms. Ryal's class, who brought in 32 memberships, was Principal for the Day on October 21st.
Corey Cochran in Ms. Fowler's class brought in 16 members and will be Assistant Principal once Mrs. Perry returns from her maternity leave.
Students in classes with 100% participation received dog tags to wear to the Coyote Moon Dance.
Our beloved Principal, Marta White, will run an obstacle course dressed in camo gear on November 4 (weather permitting).
Moon Dance HOWLING Success
Attendance was great at Friday's Coyote Moon Dance.  PTA did a wonderful job decorating the cafeteria as well as organizing and coordinating all the fun baskets for the silent auction.  This is so much fun for everyone.  It couldn't happen without all the parents working together to get donations and put the baskets together.  Everyone enjoyed being together and letting our students have a safe activity to celebrate the season.
Reflections
"Beauty Is" will be the theme for 2009-2010 PTA Reflections Program.  Reflections is one of the premier programs sponsored by the National and Texas PTA.  It encourages students to think creatively and to express themselves through the arts.  Students do not have to be in art to submit an entry.  Entry submission deadline will be November 14th.

There are six categories and no limit to the number of entries in each one or by student:

Literature, photography, visual arts, dance, film production and musical composition

The work submitted must be original to this year's theme.  Entry forms will be available in the school office.  For general and specific instructions on each of the categories, go to:  www.txpta.org/programs/reflections

If there are any questions, please email Kathy Davis at:  kathydavis09@gmail.com

PTA Meeting
November 17th is our next PTA Meeting.  Fourth Grade will be performing.  Due to our large crowds at PTA, we will have our meeting and program at Birdville High School's auditorium.  BHS is located at  9100 Mid Cities.  Please enter the east door and people will direct you to the right place.  We'll meet a little earlier--the start time will be 6:30.  Chick-fil-a will still be available at 6:00.

cameraP icture Re-Takes
Students who are new to our school or who were absent on picture day are encouraged to have their picture taken when Lifetouch photographers are here for re-takes on Wednesday, November 11.  Forms are available in the office.  If you were not happy with your student's picture that recently came home, simply return the package on November 11 and Lifetouch will re-take the picture, no questions asked.

Volunteer Appreciation
We hope many parents will be able to volunteer on the Fun Run Day.  We would like to show our appreciation by providing a light lunch for all volunteers on that day, Friday, November 13th.  There will be a break from 11:50 -- 12:25 and we encourage you to come relax in the library and enjoy visiting with other volunteers before you continue your Friday.

Coyote with Character
Students elect a representative from their class each six weeks who will be honored at the Coyote with Character Breakfast.   Those nominated for the second six weeks will be honored on Tuesday morning, November 17th.  Invitations will be sent to parents of those students receiving this honor.  Please make every effort to attend this special event when your child is honored with this.  It's a wonderful memory for you to share with your child.  For more information contact Ms. Knight, our school counselor.

Celebration of Kids

Each six weeks students who have outstanding academic performance and who have perfect attendance are awarded ribbons at our Celebration of Kids.  Students are also inducted into the Circle of Courage during this Celebration.  We hope every Walker Creek Scholar strives to be inducted into the Circle of Courage.  Our Principal, Ms. White, explains each time what qualities are looked at when teachers are making their selection.  Students who have shown courage by doing the right thing even in difficult situations, students who have had to work really hard to achieve what's easy for others, or students who put others' needs above their own would be examples of the kind of students who receive this honor.  Our next Celebration of Kids is November 24th.  Kindergarten, first and second graders assemble at 8:45.  Grade 3, 4 and 5 have their celebration at 9:30.  Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Battle of Books

Does your child love to read?  Is his/her comprehension amazing?  Then we need your child on our Battle of the Books team.  Students work together as a team to answer questions about particular books.  They will compete in January against other elementary schools in our district.  This does take a commitment of practice time after school one day each week and then twice a week after Christmas.  For more information, please contact one of the sponsors, JoAnne Webster, Barbara White, Jose Batista, Stephanie Simmons or Tracy Eager.

Spelling Bee
The written spelling test will be on Wednesday morning, November 18th at 8:45.  The top 30 students from that test will participate in the Spelling Bee on Thursday, December 3rd.  The winner of that competition will represent Walker Creek at the Birdville ISD competition in the spring.

We are most proud to be having visitors from Dell Computers observing many of our classes on November 19th & 20th.  These professionals will be learning how a school in the 21st Century uses technology. Their goal will be to find ways to serve students and educators in the future.  We welcome them to Walker Creek and know they will be impressed with our students' abilities and love of learning.
