WELCOME SCHOLARS AND PARENTS TO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR What an exciting year is ahead of us. Our teachers and staff are so excited about "Digging Deeper at the Creek". Parents, you will notice a change in the way your scholars learn to think this year. Be sure and attend Curriculum Night for your child/children so you can start to get a glimpse of the change in the way our teachers will teach this year. Our training was fantastic this summer and we are ready to implement everything we learned. We look forward to a great year at WCE. |

DISTRIBUTION OF LITERATURE
In an effort to eliminate the amount of paperwork sent home to parents from outside organizations, BISD has implemented a new policy. This policy allows for two school functions per school year, one fall and one spring, where outside organizations can have fliers available to distribute to parents. Fliers will be available on campus and will not be sent home. Walker Creek has designated Friday, August 21, 2009 (Meet Your Teacher Night) and Tuesday, March 9, 2010 (Open House) as the days that printed materials from outside vendors will be available on campus. Businesses and organizations who wish to display fliers must turn one in to the school office for approval by March 1. In addition, the district provides outside organizations the opportunity to post their information on the district Web site anytime during the year. These fliers can be viewed at www.birdvilleschools.net. The link is on the left side under, "Community Activities for Students." |
PTA/FAMILY FUN NIGHT
Our first PTA Meeting/Family Fun Night will be Friday, September 18 from 6:00 - 8:00. This will be a Red Carpet Event. There will be a brief PTA Meeting at 6:00 then everyone will enjoy watching the movie Night at the Museum. This will be a fun night for all. Who knows, some characters may come to life!!!!?? |
FALL PICTURES
We have scheduled fall pictures to be taken on Wednesday, September 30. This will be a pre-pay program. All students will be photographed, but packages will only be ordered for those who bring payment on Picture Day. For our spring pictures, parents will have the option of viewing the pictures before they decide to buy them.

COYOTE WITH CHARACTER BREAKFAST
One student from each classroom who exemplifies outstanding character will be honored at a breakfast on Tuesday, September 29th. This is a special day for both your child and you, the parent. If your child receives this honor you will be notified in writing from the school Counselor.

KIDS BEACH CLUB
Once again our 3rd - 5th grade students will be given the opportunity to join Kids Beach Club. They will meet on Mondays starting September 28 in the gym

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Please keep saving your Box Tops for Education. This is a wonderful way to help our school by just remembering to cut that little coupon off products you already purchase. Last year we were able to put $900 toward the teachers' summer training by redeeming our Box Tops for Education.
|
| LABELS FOR EDUCATION
Another way to support our school is by saving the UPCs from Campbell Soup products. For a list of the many products that qualify go to www.labelsforeducation.com. There are many brands we all buy such as Prego, Chef Boyardee, V-8 and others. Tell your relatives to help us. It's amazing what can happen when we all collect together.

TRAFFIC
The first week of school has been hectic in the traffic around the school. Please put your red, blue or yellow card in your window to help us help you get in the correct lane. (If you need another card, e-mail your child's teacher and they will be glad to provide that.) It is imperative that everyone who may pick up your child be given a copy of our traffic plan. When everyone knows the rules and follows them, our traffic plan works like a charm. Remember that being in the proper lane both at drop off in the morning and at pick up time in the afternoon is essential. If you became frustrated with the situation the first week, give the circle drive another try after studying the plan. You will find that it really is a viable plan to get our kids quickly and safely to where they need to be.
|
NEW STATE LAWS
Please be aware of the many new laws that go into effect this month. HB55 regards cell phones in school zones. HB537 regards seat belts and child car seats. You can check these new laws out at www.legis.state.tx.us. |
CHANGES IN AFTER SCHOOL ROUTINE
Occasionally you will have a situation come up where you need your child to ride with someone else, not go to daycare, or walk home when he/she normally does not walk home. We must have something from you, such as an e-mail to the teacher or a phone call to the office before we will allow that change to take place. Children sometimes get confused about the exact plan, so it's important that we hear it from you.

Volunteer Orientation
Tuesday, September 8th Walker Creek Library 8:15 - 8:30 a.m.
or 6:15 - 6:30 p.m.
(for those who can't make the morning orientation) BISD requires all approved volunteers to attend a short
campus orientation each year. The meeting is required
for any parent or guardian who plans to volunteer
at Walker Creek Elementary in any capacity. |
Nurse's Information
|
Medication Parents must provide medication and written permission on the district's medication permit form for it to be given. Medication must be in the original container and directions for over-the-counter medications will be strictly adhered to. Prescription medication must also be in the original container with a prescription label. This includes inhalers. When Your Child Needs To Stay Home Please keep your child home if they have a fever of 100° or more, is vomiting or has diarrhea. The school district policy states children may return to school when they have been free from fever (without Tylenol or Motrin), vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours. This is not only for the protection of your child but for the protection of other children at our school. Please call the nurse's office when your child has been diagnosed by a physician with something infectious such as the flu, strep throat, chicken pox or a staph infection. We keep track of infectious diseases in the school. Emergency Contact Information If your phone number or contact information changes during the school year please make sure you update the front office with your new information. We want to make sure we are able to contact you if your child is sick or in case of an emergency. Health ScreeningsThe state of Texas mandates that all kindergartners, 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders be screened for hearing and vision problems as well as Acanthosis Nigricians. Our screenings will be held on October 14. If you receive a referral form for hearing, vision or Acanthosis Nigricans please follow up with your physician and inform the nurse of the results. If your child is in 2nd or 4th grade and you feel they are having difficulty with their hearing or vision, please let me know and I will screen them for you. Community Resources School nurses have access to a variety of community resources to help students and their families. Many of them are based on financial need. If you need assistance with medical or BISD resources such as the JPS clinic at Carrie F. Thomas, Clothes Connection or Supply Depot please see the school nurse. Head LiceStudents found to have evidence of live head lice will be excluded from school. After treatment students are to be brought to the nurse's office by a parent/guardian for readmission to school at the nurse's discretion. Extra Clothing The nurse's clothing closet is running very low this year. If your child has a history of having bathroom accidents please put an extra pair of clothing, underwear and socks in their backpack so we will not have to call you to bring a change of clothing. This is a good idea for all kindergartners. If you need assistance with any health related issues please feel free to contact me at 817-547-3512 or julie_warner@birdville.k12.tx.us

RUNNING CLUB IS COMING
Ms. White will start running club earlier this year. Our orientation meeting will be Wednesday, September 30th, at 3:30 . This is open to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to participate after school on Wednesdays. Students in younger grades can run if a parent runs or walks with them. This is a great way to teach our scholars about setting goals and training for a big event by meeting smaller goals. We will culminate our training by running in the Fun Run on November 13th.

PTA Handbook & Directory
WCE PTA is excited to offer you the opportunity to send a personal message to your favorite Coyote in this year's directory. Your child will be bringing home an order form soon. Messages are $5 each and will help pay for the printing of the handbook. Only PTA members receive a Handbook & Directory, so if you're not a member, join today by contacting Carol Brandt at brandt_c@sbcglobal.net. Also, take advantage of the advertising slots available in the Handbook & Directory. All members of the PTA (last year we had over 500 members) will receive a directory and will see your advertising. The advertising order form will be included with the personal message form that will be going home with students. Advertising rates will range from $40 to $110 according to the size and location of the ad. The Handbook & Directory will go to print in October and distributed to PTA members in late October or early November. If you have any questions, please contact Darla Vaughan at vaughandavis@sbcglobal.net.

WE WANT YOU TO JOIN PTA!
There is still time! Every person who joins PTA helps not only his or her own child, but EVERY child. Imagine how much we can all do for our children if every parent joins PTA.
By joining PTA, you make it possible to provide events like Family Fun Nights, Coyote Moon Dance, Science Fair, and Spring Carnival. Also, you help make it possible to supply things that help our students and teachers. In previous years, Walker Creek PTA has helped pay for field trips, given all teachers money to purchase classroom supplies, art supplies, P.E. supplies and music supplies. PTA has provided picnic tables and tetherball poles, and helped provide our beautiful marquee, and SO much more.
The only way PTA can accomplish things like this is if YOU join. WE WANT YOU! It's not too late to Join PTA! Below, you will find a PTA Membership Dues Form. You can clip it, fill it out, and send it along with $6.00 per member, to your child's teacher. There are also membership forms available in the office or from your child's teacher. If you have any questions, please contact Carol Brandt at brandt_c@sbcglobal.net with "Membership" in the subject area.
