As temperatures rise and the days stretch longer into the summer months, many of us are enjoying vacations by the poolside and outdoor activities in the hot sun. Unfortunately, summer fun goes hand in hand with more sweating, increased chances of dehydration, and coming home with sunburned and dried out skin. In this issue, we'd like to introduce you to a few of our products that may be particularly helpful this season.

As we go about our daily activities, it is easy to forget how important staying sufficiently hydrated is. But with water being approximately 60% of our body weight, it is critical to overall health. A general rule of thumb for an average sedentary person is to divide your weight (lbs) in half and drink that many ounces of water in a day. So, a person weighing 160 lbs should drink at least 80 ounces (10 glasses) of water per day. However, warm temperatures, exercise, and illness can greatly increase that demand.
It is important to understand that the fluids within and outside the cells of our body are not just plain water. They contain a delicate and complex balance of electrically charged molecules, or electrolytes, from a variety of dissolved salts such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. The positive and negative electric charges of these ions create osmotic gradients across our cell membranes, and the resulting currents facilitate the transmission of nerve impulses, nutrients, caloric energy, fluids, and the removal of toxic wastes. They affect nearly every process that goes on in our body, including hormonal secretion, muscle activation, maintenance of blood pH, and hydration itself. Studies show that dehydration and subsequent ionic imbalances can affect physical performance, cognition, thermoregulation, eyesight, kidney function, cause muscle spasms, fatigue, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, and even coma. |

Elusive Electrolytes
What can we do to be sure we have the electrolytes we need? There are dozens of "enhanced water" and "sport" drinks on the market today that claim to replenish electrolytes lost through vigorous activity. However, many of these offer mainly sodium, plus as much as 10 teaspoons of sugar in a typical sport beverage. Average modern diets, unfortunately, already provide more than enough salt and sugar, and diabetics, children, and people with high blood pressure, are advised caution in drinking sport drinks, especially if not exercising. Perspiration with Purpose!
Thomas Edison once said "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration."
As unpleasant and odiferous as it may sometimes be, sweating is an important and healthy bodily function. Perspiration is our body's natural response to attempt to bring down its temperature by evaporation, restore electrolyte balance by excreting salts, and eliminate harmful toxins. Normal perspiration, itself, is essentially odorless, and most of the offensive smells we encounter are byproducts of bacteria on the skin that are busy breaking down the proteins contained in our sweat.
Most antiperspirant/deodorants on the market today contain a number of potentially harmful ingredients. Parabens, used as preservatives, have been found in cancerous breast tissue; Propylene glycol, used to form a cohesive base for other ingredients, can cause allergic skin reactions, and in rare cases of over-absorption, has been associated with serious hyperosmolality (a type of dehydration); TEA and DEA, added to adjust pH, can break down to harmful toxins and be absorbed by the skin. Aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants, form plugs in the sweat ducts, temporarily stopping the flow of perspiration to the skin surface. Aside from road-blocking one of the body's important avenues of excretion, aluminum can be absorbed into the body, and research has shown possible links with breast cancer, Alzheimer's, and Lou Gehrig's and Parkinson's disease. |

to our product line and we are very excited about it. This remarkable substance is a deep red pigment that we get from microscopic freshwater algae known as Haematococcus pluvialis. The reddish color of salmon, lobster, shrimp, and flamingos, is due to their eating this tiny unicellular organism. Astaxanthin has been found to be one of the most powerful antioxidants known - in fact, it is claimed to have 550 times more radical oxygen quenching power than Vitamin E! Numerous studies have investigated the effects of Astaxanthin on skin health.
