Planning for the Expansion

The Board of Selectmen and the Board of Trustees of the Scranton Library have agreed to take an initial step forward in an effort to bring the Scranton Library expansion proposal to a town-wide referendum later this year. This initial step is the drafting of an agreement between the Town and the Library that defines the role of each in the future should the town approve a bond issue to finance the expansion of the Library.

Stay tuned for more details in the next newsletter.

 Shackleton's "Endurance"

Endurance:  Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing will be discussed when Sara de Beer, Independent Discussion Leader, leads the first discussion of Impossible Missions and Expeditions on Tuesday, March 11 from 1 to 2 pm.

This is a thrilling account of one of the most astonishing feats of exploration and human courage ever recorded. In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the Antarctic ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Lansing describes how the men in an open boat survived a 1,000 mile voyage across the stormiest ocean on the globe, and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

To register for the discussion and for further information, please call 245-7365.

Multiple copies of the book are available at the Library.
